IRENA Report Indicates That Various Countries Will Benefit from Investments in Renewable Energy
A report published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), titled “Renewable Energy and Jobs 2022,” highlighted the regional and national development of various locations, including Southeast Asian countries that are becoming references in photovoltaic (PV) solar manufacturing, as well as biofuels.
Just last year, the number of global jobs in the renewable energy sector surpassed 12.7 million, with a jump of more than 700,000 jobs in a year. China accounts for 42% of the global total, and nearly two-thirds of all jobs in the sector are located in Asia. Currently, China is the largest manufacturer and installer of photovoltaic solar panels and is creating an even greater number of jobs in offshore wind, followed by the European Union and Brazil, which both recorded a 10% increase. The report also indicates that solar energy was the fastest-growing sector last year.
Meanwhile, India added more than 10 megawatts of photovoltaic solar energy, ensuring job creation in installation, even though it remains heavily reliant on imported panels. Thus, it is important for governments and worker organizations to stay united in the country to maintain stability in the sector.

Renewable Energies Create More Jobs Around the World
In this way, IRENA’s Director-General, Francesco La Camera, pointed out that despite numerous challenges, the jobs generated in renewable energies remain resilient and prove to be a reliable engine for job creation. He believes it is essential for governments to encourage the expansion of renewable jobs at home. Along with WWI, IRENA is the leading intergovernmental agency for global energy transformation and has been supporting countries in their transition to a more energetic and sustainable future, serving as a major platform for international cooperation, as well as a center of excellence and repository of technology, resources, and financial knowledge regarding renewable energies.
Additionally, another IRENA report outlines recommendations for policy formulation, focusing on challenges and policy solutions, and highlighted available options such as carbon pricing and market-based measures, which include examples from different countries. Today, Brazil has 150 GW of solar and wind energy, with an additional capacity of more than 750 GW offshore. Thus, the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) released the study “Sustainable Hydrogen: Perspectives and Potential for the Brazilian Industry,” presenting pathways for renewable hydrogen as a new energy frontier.
Since 2021, Brazil has announced 131 new large-scale green hydrogen projects. Just this year, more than 30 countries launched national plans in this area. Used in refineries, the chemical industry, and steelmaking, the industrial sector is the main consumer of green hydrogen, with an incredible mark of 87 million tons of green hydrogen in 2020 alone.
