Continuing Its Carbon Emission Reduction Plan, Vale Now Seeks to Replace Fuel Oil with Natural Gas in Its Operations and Will Rely on the Supply of the Resource from Eneva’s Reserves in the Parnaíba Basin

The energy company Eneva announced last Friday (07/01) the signing of a contract with Vale to enable the supply of natural gas to the São Luís Plant in Maranhão. In this way, the energy company intends to carry out a new round of investments in the production of the resource in the Parnaíba Basin for fuel supply, while the mining company seeks to replace fuel oil to ensure more sustainability in production.

Vale Will Begin Receiving Natural Gas from Eneva to Replace Fuel Oil in the Production Chain Starting in 2024, as Stipulated in Signed Contract

The natural gas market in Brazil has been growing strongly in recent months, especially after supply issues with Petrobras, and companies are now seeking their own contracts to reduce dependence on the state-owned company. Thus, Vale has taken another step towards sustainability and secured the signing of an agreement with Eneva for the receipt of fuel in the coming years.

The supply of natural gas will begin in 2024, according to the contract signed between the companies, and will be responsible for supplying the São Luís Plant in Maranhão. Furthermore, the arrival of the commodity will be responsible for replacing fuel oil in Vale’s mineral production chain and will also ensure a reduction in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 28%.

In this way, the companies are advancing towards a more sustainable and cleaner future in the mining industry in Brazil.

Eneva highlighted that the signing of the contract was only possible due to the regulations implemented by the New Gas Market framework, which allows for the contracting of the input within the Free Market. This has been a recent contribution to the fuel sector in Brazil but is already enabling new directions for the segment as it opened the market for private contracts.

Eneva Will Invest in the Production of the Parnaíba Basin and Vale Aims to Expand Sustainability by Replacing Fuel Oil with Natural Gas

For the supply of natural gas to Vale over the next few years, Eneva will utilize its reserves from the Parnaíba Basin and will install an additional liquefaction unit for the input in Parnaíba with an installed capacity of 300,000 m³/day. The company also emphasized the importance of investments in the Parnaíba Basin and stated: “With this new plant, the total liquefaction capacity at the Parnaíba Complex will reach 600,000 m³/day. This volume will be mainly allocated to meet contracts with Suzano, recently announced, and with Vale.”

The reserves from the Parnaíba Basin will be essential for Vale to use natural gas in place of fuel oil and continue its decarbonization plan. The mining company currently aims to reduce its direct and indirect carbon emissions by 33% by 2030. Thus, the plant in Maranhão will cease using fuel oil and adopt natural gas to ensure greater sustainability in the pelletizing of minerals.
