The natural gas produced by Eneva in the Azulão field, located in the Amazon Basin, will be used to generate energy by the Jaguatirica II thermoelectric plant.
Today, Monday (27/09), Eneva started commercial production in the Azulão field, located in the Amazon Basin. It is the first project to start operating in the region, 20 years after its discovery. According to the epbr website, the natural gas produced by Eneva in the Azulão field, located in the Amazon Basin, will be used in the generation of energy by the thermoelectric plant (UTE) Jaguatirica II. The Azulão field, in the Amazon Basin
Eneva purchased the Azulão field from Petrobras in November 2017 for US$54,5 million. The area was discovered in 1999 and declared commercial in 2004, but until its sale, 13 years later, it was not put into operation by the state-owned company, which even studied different production models for the project.
Amazonas is a major producer of oil and natural gas on land, but in the Solimões Basin, where there is infrastructure for moving and processing oil and gas, and outflow to Manaus.
Gas production from Eneva's Azulão field
The gas produced in Azulão will be used in the generation of energy by the Jaguatirica II thermoelectric plant (UTE), with 117 MW of power, contracted in the 1st auction to serve isolated systems, held in 2019. The gas will be liquefied and transported by trucks to Boa Vista , capital of Roraima.
The energy will serve to serve Roraima, where the plant is located, the only state in the country still disconnected from the National Interconnected System (SIN) of energy transmission. It therefore depends on the local generation. In all, Eneva's investment forecast is R$ 1,8 billion.

In news published by Valor Econômico newspaper, Eneva is going to build a thermoelectric plant in the interior of the state of Amazonas. The company purchasing Campo de Azulão for natural gas exploration, in Silves, in the state of Amazonas, foresees an investment of R$ 100 to R$ 120 million and the construction of the new plant should be ready by next year. As a result, the thermoelectric plant will be built near the Azulão field, in the Amazon Basin, where Eneva will drill new gas extraction villages.
According to Eneva's director of operations Lino Cançado says that “We have been working with other projects on land and also with gas from LNG and pre-salt. We have the competence to put projects on their feet, do basic engineering, market research, auction participation and implementation and operation and maintenance (O&M). It is only natural that we have the ambition to participate in this”.
In Parnaíba, where Eneva has an installed capacity to generate 1,4 GW, Cançado stated that he intends to renew the contracts for the thermoelectric plants. On the other hand, he explained that he will not make new investments in the region. In the Paraná Basin, where the company acquired four blocks in 2020, operations have yet to start. The contract, however, provides for activities until 2029 for the minimum exploratory program in the region.
