With High Rates and Growing Consumption, Expert Explains Why Air Conditioning Leads Energy Spending in Homes, Followed by Electric Shower, Refrigerator, and Freezer, and Teaches How to Reduce the Value of the Electricity Bill.
According to the portal economiareal, the electricity bill is one of the main headaches for Brazilians, especially during periods of intense heat and high rates. According to electrical engineer Alan Henn, common devices in everyday life can weigh heavily on the wallet and the biggest villain is air conditioning.
According to the expert, the device consumes a large amount of energy because it needs to maintain low temperatures for long periods, especially in the warmer regions of the country. Other items, such as electric showers, refrigerators, and freezers, are also among the biggest responsible for the increase in household bills.
Air Conditioning as the Main Villain
The engineer explains that air conditioning is the main responsible for high energy consumption in homes with the equipment installed.

Buried under China, a colossal machine weighing 20,000 tons began operating as the largest neutrino detector on the planet and, in just 59 days, surpassed results that science took half a century to achieve.
-
Iran enters the center of a climate alert after the war emitted 5.6 million tons of CO2 in two weeks, surpassing the annual pollution of entire countries.
-
Lunar exploration may change after a Chinese probe finds a “cavity” of radiation that reduces the impact on astronauts by up to 20% at certain times on the Moon.

Artemis 2 sends four astronauts on a historic mission to the Moon after 50 years, with a launch on April 1 and a record flight to the far side of the Earth’s natural satellite.
This happens because it works continuously to maintain a cool environment, which requires a high electrical demand.
The lower the set temperature, the higher the monthly spending.
Moreover, prolonged use during the day and night, especially in the summer, causes consumption to soar.
“Air conditioning needs to maintain low temperatures for many hours, which makes it the heaviest equipment on the electricity bill,” says Henn. Older models without an energy efficiency label contribute even more to waste.
The Impact of Electric Showers and Constant Refrigeration
Another major villain pointed out by the engineer is the electric shower, one of the most commonly used devices in Brazilian homes.
It has a high power rating and consumes energy quickly to heat water, especially in cold months. Even with just a few minutes of showering, the impact on the bill is substantial.
The refrigerator and freezer come right after. Although they are indispensable, these appliances operate 24 hours a day, keeping the compressor active to preserve food.
“They consume energy constantly because they need to be on all the time,” highlights the specialist.
Other Devices That Influence Consumption
Although they have a smaller individual impact, televisions, microwaves, and lamps also influence total consumption, especially when used for long periods or in poorly ventilated and poorly lit areas.
The simultaneous use of several devices, combined with the habit of leaving them on standby, can account for up to 12% of the electricity bill in an average household.
According to the engineer, the total of these small daily consumptions is often what makes a difference in the final value of the bill.
He reminds us that older electronic devices tend to consume more because they lack efficiency technologies and automatic shut-off controls.
How to Reduce the Value of the Electricity Bill
To ease the financial burden, the expert recommends adopting conscious usage habits and investing in devices with a Procel A label, which ensure greater energy efficiency.
In the case of air conditioning, the tip is to keep the temperature between 23°C and 25°C, avoid opening doors and windows, and perform regular cleaning of the filters to reduce the workload on the device.
Other actions include unplugging devices when not in use, replacing incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs, and adjusting shower times to off-peak consumption moments when the electrical grid is less overloaded.
Small routine changes can significantly lower the electricity bill over the month.
The analysis reinforces that the electricity bill can be controlled with attention to the main villains and simple behavioral changes.
Air conditioning, showers, and refrigerators are essential, but using them in a conscious way is key to balancing comfort and savings.
And you, have you noticed which devices weigh the most on your electricity bill? Do you typically use air conditioning for long periods or do you try to save by adjusting the temperature and usage time?
