Engie Brazil Signed a New Letter of Intent with Invest Paraná and Plans to Generate Over 10 GW of Green Hydrogen by 2030, Creating Various Jobs for Local Residents.
Engie Brazil Energy signed a new letter of intent with the private investment attraction agency Invest Paraná this Thursday (6). The agreement aims to develop large-scale projects for the production of green hydrogen in the state, generating jobs and income for the population. The document is a cooperation instrument that usually precedes an agreement with more defined responsibilities between the companies.
Engie Brazil Plans to Implement 10 GW of Green Hydrogen
According to the CEO and Investor Relations Director of Engie, Eduardo Sattamini, the company’s global strategy is to establish a strong position in hydrogen, with Brazil playing a crucial role in that. Globally, the group plans to implement the production of 4 GW of hydrogen by the beginning of the next decade.
In Brazil, the company has a portfolio of approximately 10 GW in clean energy, in addition to closed partnerships in the hydrogen hub in Ceará, which are expected to create new jobs. At the Port of Pecém, for example, the company plans to start with 100 to 150 MW of installed electrolysis capacity within five years, with potential for expansion by the end of the decade. The main focus is on exporting the green hydrogen molecule or its derivatives.

A study reveals the expansion of renewable energy procurement in Brazil and shows how companies are taking advantage of opportunities to reduce expenses, ensure energy efficiency, and strengthen strategic environmental commitments.
Sattamini explains that Engie Brazil understands that the partnership with Invest Paraná is essential to foster and drive the energy transition agenda. The company aims to be a leader in solutions for the decarbonization of various industrial sectors and their supply chains. In addition to Green Hydrogen in Paraná, which can create various jobs, Engie Brazil is studying the country’s potential in White Hydrogen, generated directly from the exploration of natural gas reserves.
Hydrogen Can Be Found in the São Francisco Basin
Collaborative studies linking the consultancies Georisk and Geo4u, Brazilian and French researchers, identified the presence of hydrogen in deep wells and in the soil of the São Francisco Basin, as well as high concentrations of hydrogen in reservoirs. The research indicates the existence of active gas systems in at least three points in the region.
Although these initial studies by Engie Brazil have been conducted, the commercial production potential of this type of fuel is still unknown. Research led by the company since 2018 indicates that Brazil may have natural hydrogen potential in at least three more states, namely Ceará, Tocantins, and Roraima.
The articles from 2019 and 2021 were authored by Engie’s Chief Scientific Officer, Isabelle Moretti, and are cited in the chapter of the Ten-Year Energy Plan (PDE) 2031. In September of last year, the company closed a deal for the sale of Pampa Sul to the investment funds Grafito and Perfin Space X, managed by Starboard and Perfin, respectively. The transaction value is R$ 2.2 billion, including debts of R$ 1.8 billion. This initiative marked the company’s exit from coal generation in Brazil as part of its decarbonization strategy.
