With a subsidy policy maintained for years, Venezuela remains one of the countries with the cheapest fuel in the world, according to international rankings, in stark contrast to the prices practiced in Brazil and other countries in Latin America.

The gasoline sold in Venezuela continues to be among the cheapest in the world.

It costs, on average, US$ 0.035 per liter, according to the most recent international survey by Global Petrol Prices.

With the conversion based on the commercial dollar exchange rate used as a reference during the period, the value comes close to R$ 0.19 per liter.

This level is much lower than what is observed in Brazil and most of Latin America.

The figure draws attention especially in Brazilian states that border the country, such as Roraima.

In these regions, the price practiced in the Venezuelan market does not follow, in the short term, the fluctuations of oil in the international market.

Experts consulted by multilateral organizations often attribute this difference to internal subsidy policies.

These measures keep fuel prices low for domestic consumption.

Subsidy Policy Supports Cheap Gasoline in Venezuela

The values reported in international rankings reflect the official price set in the country.

This number, however, does not represent all buying situations.

According to the methodology of Global Petrol Prices, Venezuela adopts a system where a monthly supply quota is sold with a strong state subsidy.

After this limit, the price charged may be higher.

The variation depends on the region and the type of gas station.

Reports from international organizations and foreign media also register periods of supply restrictions.

In these situations, prices may arise outside the official system.

This occurs especially in informal markets.

However, these values do not enter the average calculation reported in international rankings.

Still, in the most recent survey, Venezuelan gasoline appears with an average of US$ 0.035 per liter.

This figure reinforces the central role of the state in determining the price of fuel in the country.

Even amid well-documented economic difficulties, the government maintains the subsidy as a policy focused on internal consumption.

Conversion of Price to Reais Varies with the Dollar

The conversion of the dollar value to reais varies according to the exchange rate used.

Considering the reference exchange rate disclosed by the Central Bank during the update period, the dollar was around R$ 5.28.

Thus, the price per liter in Venezuela ranges between R$ 0.18 and R$ 0.19.

Economists emphasize that small exchange rate fluctuations can alter the final value in reais.

These variations do not change the fact that Venezuelan prices remain well below the regional average.

For this reason, the number disclosed in Brazilian currency should be understood as an estimate based on the current exchange rate.

Average Price of Gasoline in Brazil in the Same Ranking

In Brazil, the scenario is distinct.

According to the same database, the average price of gasoline stands at US$ 1.17 per liter.

The value is calculated from official information from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels.

Converted to Brazilian currency in the same period, the average price exceeds R$ 6 per liter.

The difference between the two countries helps to illustrate the regional contrast.

In a direct comparison in dollars, the cost of a liter of gasoline in Brazil equals dozens of liters at the Venezuelan official price.

This relationship disregards purchasing limits, local rules, and exchange rate variations.

Gasoline Ranking in Latin America

In the most recent Latin American ranking, Venezuela appears isolated in first place.

The country leads among nations with the cheapest gasoline, at US$ 0.035 per liter.

Followed by countries with significantly higher prices.

Equador, Guyana, and Panama present prices below 1 dollar.

Even so, these levels remain far from the value recorded in Venezuela.

Other countries in the region concentrate around US$ 1 per liter.

This group includes Honduras, Guatemala, Bolivia, and El Salvador.

Next are Suriname, Grenada, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and Colombia.

All of these countries report prices above 1 dollar per liter.

Brazil is in this intermediate group.

The country is close to Jamaica and Argentina in the survey.

Higher prices are recorded in Peru, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Cuba.

At the bottom of the regional ranking are Chile, Mexico, Belize, Barbados, and Uruguay.

The latter has the highest average price in Latin America, above US$ 2 per liter.

What the Data Shows About Fuel Prices

Experts in energy policy point out that the price of gasoline to consumers does not depend solely on oil production.

The refining capacity is also not the only determining factor.

Items such as tax burden, subsidies, market structure, and government decisions directly influence the amount charged at the pumps.

The ranking organizers themselves highlight that the data reflects official and average prices.

These numbers may not capture situations of scarcity, queues, or values practiced outside the formal sales channels.

Even so, the survey is used as an international reference.

The database serves to compare fuel pricing policies between countries.
