The company Equinor aims to become neutral in emissions by 2050 and intends to support itself in the national biofuels segment. The aviation biokerosene green diesel production project together with CNPEM will contribute to the goals.

The National Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) is in a partnership with the company Equinor Brasil for strong investments in the sector of biofuels national. The organizations came together to study the viability of producing aviation biokerosene and green diesel from agroforestry residues. The project will have a total company investment of around BRL 8,5 million from Equinor over the next few years.

With an investment of BRL 8,5 million by Equinor, a project in partnership with CNPEM for the production of biofuels will boost the company's environmental commitment

The Equinor company has been seeking to expand its environmental commitment and minimize emissions in its operations over the last few years.

Now, the company has teamed up with CNPEM to develop a project to enable the production of aviation biokerosene and green diesel from agroforestry residues.

The objective is to contribute to the refining of a low-carbon hydrocarbon, in line with Equinor's goals of reducing scope 1 emissions in the company's operations.

The focus of the biofuels market is a trend that currently crosses several Brazilian companies, due to the high potential of biomass that can be used in the country.

In this way, Equinor intends to invest R$ 8,5 million for the development of the project, in addition to R$ 4,7 million from the Brazilian Company for Industrial Research and Innovation (Embrapii) and an economic contribution from the CNPEM Embrapii Biotechnology Unit. .

The company sees in aviation biokerosene and green diesel an opportunity to drive the generation of sustainable transport fuels, while reducing its own emissions.

For the year 2050, the company is preparing to become neutral in carbon emissions, thus investing in projects such as the one with CNPEM to reach the targets.

By the end of 2030, the company intends to dedicate half of its investments to low-carbon and renewable solutions, boosting its neutralization plan.

Oil company celebrates first project for the production of renewable and advanced biofuels in a new partnership with CNPEM

Equinor and CNPEM's project for the production of aviation biokerosene and green diesel, both renewable and advanced biofuels, marks a new moment in the national market.

Andrea Achôa, RD&I Manager at Equinor Brasil, celebrated the announcement of the initiative: “Through the partnership with CNPEM, we take an important step towards collaborating with the reduction of emissions in our operations, one of the focuses of our strategy globally. Research and development are fundamental for us to shape the future of energy and the academy is a fundamental part in this sense”.

Through the R&D initiative, several activities will be carried out at CNPEM's National Biorenewable Laboratory (LNBR) to understand the molecular mechanisms for the decarboxylation of fatty acids.

In the initial phase of the project, the focus will be on the production of renewable energy, which will be used at the end of the energy company's operations.

In addition to CNPEM, the project will also feature international collaboration between researchers from Brazil and the Equinor Research Center in Norway.

Thus, Equinor invests in sustainability and environmental commitment for the coming years.
