The Energy Transition Is Already Happening And Natural Gas Was Addressed At Rio Oil & Gas As One Of The Main Fuels To Help At This Moment

The 2022 edition of Rio Oil & Gas brought important discussions regarding the energy transition. In this sense, a debate session held at the event titled “The Role Of Natural Gas In The Energy Transition In Brazil” raised an important debate. After all, this fuel seems to have a key role in this transition being sought within the oil and gas sector.

The CEO of PSR, Luiz Augusto Barroso, and the President of EPE share the view that natural gas will continue to play an important role in the power sector. Currently, this fuel already serves as a complement to electrification, and the trend is for its increased use in the coming years. Want to know more? Keep reading.

Biogas And Biometane Are Promising Variations Of Natural Gas In The Oil And Gas Sector In Brazil

According to Gabriel Kropsch, Vice President of Abiogás, Brazil has great potential for the production of biometane and biogas, important variations of natural gas. In this regard, Gabriel also states that Brazil can produce the equivalent of 120 million cubic meters per year. This type of renewable and alternative fuel has already been nicknamed “caipira pre-salt”, as it complements oil.

Large companies such as Eneva, 3R Petroleum, and PetroReconcavo are some of the key names in the oil and gas sector that produce this type of fuel. During the Rio Oil & Gas event, these companies participated in a panel titled “Natural Gas Production On Land: Perspectives And Creative Solutions” and reiterated the importance of establishing appropriate regulation and taxation.

Regulation And Taxation Should Be Established To Organize Natural Gas Commerce In The Oil And Gas Sector

Camila Schoti, General Manager of Energy, Natural Gas, and Liquids Trading at Eneva, stated that regulation and taxation on the activities of companies working with this fuel should not hinder commerce. Thus, she emphasized the importance of economic studies to give more visibility and prominence to biogas and biometane.

Furthermore, Camila argued that producers need to have a security of return on their investment when using these new renewable fuels derived from natural gas. Therefore, regulation would be ideal to stimulate growth and competitiveness of this fuel in the oil and gas sector. It is worth noting that Eneva has formed a new partnership with Vale and will expand the use of energy for these industrial consumers.

Matheus Dias from 3R Petroleum agrees on the need for greater regulation of natural gas for increased competitiveness in the market. Additionally, João Vitor Silva Moreira, Director of Regulation and New Business at PetroReconcavo, also points out that there is a constantly expanding market in the Northeast, with good growth prospects following new regulations.

Investment In This Gas Is One Of The Main Challenges That The Oil And Gas Sector May Face In The Coming Years

There was also a discussion about the “Opportunities And Challenges Of The New Business Environment In The Natural Gas Sector.” During this debate, several experts working with natural gas pointed out what the expectations are for the coming years. In this sense, they stressed that the biggest challenge may be investment in technology and infrastructure to meet the demand in the energy transition.

According to Jose Carlos Broisler Oliver, Executive Director of Compass Gas and Energy, it is necessary to diversify energy sources, and natural gas is excellent. For his part, Victor Santos, Executive Director of Galp, stated that natural gas allows for greater diversification of the energy matrix as it facilitates the entry and use of green hydrogen in Brazil.

The CEO of Enauta, Décio Oddone, pointed out that the possible construction of gas pipelines would be a great way to leverage Brazil’s potential for the use of natural gas. However, once again, investment would be one of the main national challenges.
