With Above-Average Salary, State Stands Out for Its Diversified Production Chain Integrated with the Brazilian Energy System.
The state of Espírito Santo concluded 2023 with the second-highest average salary in the country in the oil and natural gas sector. According to the 8th edition of the Oil and Natural Gas Industry Yearbook in the State, prepared by the Observatory of the Federation of Industries of Espírito Santo (Findes), professionals in the local production chain earned an average of R$ 9,225.14 per month. This amount exceeds the national average for the sector by 6.95%, which was R$ 8,625.72 during the same period.
Espírito Santo Consolidates as a Strategic Hub for the Oil and Gas Sector
The result highlights the importance of Espírito Santo in the oil and natural gas sector, particularly regarding the compensation offered to workers and the growth of the state’s production chain. The data used in the survey are based on the Annual Report of Social Information (Rais) from the Ministry of Labor and Employment.
In 2023, the state had 15,093 formal links in the sector, representing 1.4% of the total jobs in Espírito Santo. In the national scenario, the state’s share reached 3% of the total 503,897 formal jobs related to the oil and gas industry.
Structure of the Production Chain in Espírito Santo
The production chain of the oil and gas sector in Espírito Santo consists of more than 600 formal companies, accounting for 2.2% of the national total. Most of these companies operate in the supply chain (81.9%), a segment responsible for supplying other stages of the industry with inputs, equipment, technology, and services.
The other segments of the local chain are distributed among supply (9.6%), exploration and production (6.4%), petrochemicals (1.1%), and petroleum derivatives (1.0%). The yearbook highlights that the structure adopted in the state has been adapted to the regional reality, excluding stages such as refining, which are not present in the local territory. This adaptation allows for a precise comparison with other federative units and maintains standardized technical criteria of the national industry.
According to the Business Environment Manager of the Findes Observatory, Nathan Diirr, the segmentation of the chain in Espírito Santo reflects the characteristics of the local production environment. He believes that the structure is integrated into the country’s energy complex and allows for the strategic operation of local companies in supplying goods and services.
Qualification and Complexity Justify Higher Average Salary
The Executive Director of the Observatory and Chief Economist at Findes, Marília Silva, explains that the high average salary recorded in Espírito Santo is a direct reflection of the complexity of the activities performed in the sector.
“Compensation reflects the technical demands of the functions and the need for highly qualified professionals,” she states.
The oil and natural gas industry is known for employing professionals with technical and higher education in areas such as engineering, geology, automation, safety, and logistics, which contributes to the appreciation of salaries in the sector. In Espírito Santo, this scenario is enhanced by the presence of companies working with innovation and advanced technology.
Sector Grew 8.3% in 2023, Highlighting the Supply Chain
The Findes yearbook also reports a growth of 8.3% in the oil and gas sector in Espírito Santo in 2023. The advance was primarily driven by the supply chain, which incorporated 33 new companies during the period — a 7% increase compared to the previous year.
This growth reinforces the trend of sector expansion in the state, which has established itself as a national reference in the provision of services and supply of equipment and solutions for the oil and gas industry. The ability to attract new businesses and generate qualified jobs positions Espírito Santo as one of the protagonists in the Brazilian energy sector.
