Gas Storage Gains Visibility in Alagoas with Origem Project, Strengthening Energy Security and Expanding Competitiveness in the Sector.

The gas storage in focus has gained relevance in Brazil, especially in Alagoas. The topic emerged strongly during the board meeting of the Federation of Industries of the State of Alagoas (FIEA). On that occasion, Origem Energia presented its underground natural gas storage project, highlighting its economic, social, and environmental impacts.

According to the company, the practice is already consolidated in various parts of the world, such as the United States and Europe. In these regions, the technique has been applied for over a century, being fundamental to ensure balance between supply and demand. Furthermore, oil companies from different countries already widely utilize this solution, which has proven efficient over time.

In Alagoas, injection and production in reservoirs have been occurring for some time. However, the novelty lies precisely in the commercial use of this activity, which strategically positions the state within the national energy scenario. This strategy reflects a modern view of how energy should be managed to maximize security, efficiency, and local development.

Additionally, Origem’s project also connects to the global trend of energy transition, as it integrates natural gas in a planned manner with the use of renewable sources. This way, even during peaks in consumption or periods of low solar and wind energy generation, the system ensures reliable and predictable supply.

The Importance of Underground Storage

The director of Gas Storage at Origem, Anderson Bastos, emphasized that the project’s main objective is to bring more security to the market. This security involves not only the operational aspect but also the commercial one.

According to him, the practice helps reduce risks caused by price fluctuations and imbalances between supply and demand. He further highlighted that storage provides flexibility and strengthens the competitive opening of the gas market, creating a safer environment for producers, distributors, and consumers.

The project manager, Danielle Carmo, reinforced that underground storage follows safety standards recognized worldwide. For her, it is a consolidated activity in the global energy sector, now placing Alagoas at a new level. Additionally, the initiative allows the state to become a strategic center for natural gas operations, with the potential for replication in other regions of the country.

How the Storage Process Works

In practice, the storage process involves injecting natural gas into geological reservoirs that have previously been explored. These locations, once occupied by oil or gas, have reservoir rocks that safely and stably store the gas in micropores.

Subsequently, the gas can be taken back to the production system whenever there is demand. This model utilizes already known and explored formations, ensuring greater efficiency and lower environmental risk. Additionally, the technology allows for continuous monitoring of the reservoir, ensuring soil integrity and avoiding environmental impacts.

The president of FIEA, José Carlos Lyra de Andrade, praised the initiative and highlighted its importance for the state. For him, the presentation was enlightening and reinforced the perception of security regarding the activity, showing how the project can serve as a reference for other Brazilian states.

International Experiences and the Consolidation of the Practice

Underground gas storage is not a global novelty. Since the early 20th century, the United States has already used the technique to address consumption fluctuations between winter and summer. Therefore, underground storage allowed gas, injected during times of lower demand, to be utilized when consumption surged. As a result, the sector reduced risks of supply shortages and gained stability.

In Europe, the practice also grew rapidly after World War II. During that period, energy crises and the need for reconstruction in countries demanded innovative solutions. Thus, underground storage became an essential part of energy policy. Today, Germany, Italy, and France systematically use this resource, ensuring stability throughout the year.

Therefore, by bringing this experience to Brazil, especially to the Northeast, Origem aligns Alagoas with successful international models. Consequently, the country moves towards a safer, more diversified, and modern energy matrix.

Socioeconomic Impact and Capacity of the Project

The project will be installed in the municipality of Pilar, within the concession of the Alagoas Pole. Its storage capacity will reach up to 50 million cubic meters of natural gas, a number that demonstrates its strategic relevance.

The initiative is part of Origem Energia’s strategy to strengthen Brazilian energy infrastructure. Thus, it is not just a regional measure, but a project that positively impacts the national scenario.

During the presentation, Origem’s representatives also highlighted the socioeconomic results of the company’s operations in the state. More than 1,500 direct and indirect jobs have already been created. Additionally, there has been a significant increase in natural gas production, which quadrupled between 2022 and 2024.

This advancement has also affected revenue. In the last year alone, royalty payments to the Union reached R$ 50 million. Since the beginning of operations in the state, the accumulated amount totals R$ 160 million, strengthening the local and national economy.

Furthermore, the project can generate new opportunities for the local industry, allowing small and medium enterprises to access natural gas in a more stable and competitive manner. Consequently, the region can become more attractive for investments, creating a virtuous cycle of development and employment.

A Strategic Step for the Energy Future

When analyzing the gas storage in focus, it becomes clear that the proposal goes beyond a simple technical solution. It represents a medium- and long-term strategy for the energy sector.

The model helps to ensure continuous supply even during periods of greater market fluctuation. In addition, the initiative reinforces Brazil’s role as a leading player in the energy transition.

Although natural gas is still a fossil source, it plays a crucial role as a transition fuel. In this sense, underground storage can offer stability and confidence for using this source while renewables increase their share.

Another important point is the strengthening of competitiveness. By ensuring more security for producers, distributors, and consumers, storage can attract new investments and generate even more jobs, creating lasting impacts on the local and national economy.

Origem’s project in Alagoas demonstrates how gas storage in focus can transform the dynamics of the energy sector and the economy of a state.

The initiative combines international experience, established technology, and a positive impact on job generation and revenue. Thus, the state positions itself as a reference in the national scenario, while Brazil advances in strengthening its energy infrastructure.

With security, transparency, and strategic vision, underground gas storage presents itself as an important step for the future of the sector.

Additionally, the practice can inspire other Brazilian states to adopt similar models, increasing the resilience of the national energy system and strengthening the country against future challenges.
