Petrobras CEO Says It Cannot Control Rising Fuel Prices
The CEO of Petrobras, Joaquim Silva e Luna, stated that there is a “zero” risk that the Brazilian state oil company will seek to artificially control fuel prices, even amid growing public outrage over inflation.
Petrobras will have to raise gasoline and diesel prices in line with its policy of international price parity, despite political pressures to the contrary, said the executive.
This week, Petrobras increased diesel prices by about 9%, its first increase in 85 days. This year, diesel prices at the refinery have risen by over 50%, which led politicians, like Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco from the center-right, to call on Petrobras to exercise a “social function” by helping to curb inflation.
“There is no chance that this [controlling prices] will happen,” said Luna in an interview with the magazine Exame on Friday night. “I consider it zero. Petrobras is a very well-regulated company, with compliance rules. No board will approve this.”
