Eternit Is Focusing on Its Project Aimed at Developing Clean Energy Through Concrete Photovoltaic Roof Tiles

Eternit has obtained the green patent grant to start its solar energy production project through the incorporation of photovoltaic cells encapsulated on the surface of its concrete tiles, according to a company statement on Monday, the 25th.

The company underwent a restructuring of its business lines in 2017, and as a result, Eternit, which is in the final stages of a bankruptcy recovery process, gave up asbestos to focus on new projects, one of which is the development of clean energy through solar concrete tiles produced by its subsidiary Tégula Solar.

At the end of August last year, Eternit began marketing its photovoltaic tiles for clean energy production made from BIG-F10 concrete and also started the commercialization project for its exclusive customers in Atibaia, São Paulo, where a Tégula factory is located.

Concrete Photovoltaic Roof Tiles for Clean Energy Production Have Various Attractives

The Tégula solar energy tile, validated and registered by Inmetro (National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology) since 2019, measures 36.5 cm by 47.5 cm and is made of concrete, incorporating photovoltaic cells into its surface.

The solar energy-producing tiles have a power output of 9.16 watts, representing an average monthly production capacity of 1.15 kWh. The tiles have an estimated lifespan of 20 years.

According to Eternit, among the advantages of solar concrete tiles is the ease of installation; they do not interfere with the architecture of buildings and have weight and structure similar to those of conventional tiles.

At the end of 2021, the photovoltaic tile made from fiber cement, F-140, from Eternit was approved by Inmetro. With this approval, Eternit completed the final stage of the tile registration project.

The First Roof Tile to Capture Solar Energy Was Developed in Brazil in 2021

In 2021, the first solar energy roof tiles were developed and marketed in Brazil by Eternit, which developed the Tégula Solar line, producing concrete tiles with photovoltaic cells incorporated into the surface.

At the time, according to Luiz Antonio Lopes, head of New Business Development at Eternit, on average, if we cover about 30% to 40% of the roof of the construction project with the solar tile developed by Eternit, the tiles will be able to provide enough energy for the house. “It just takes sunlight,” he concludes.

“The tiles are a product that is easy to install and do not interfere with the architecture of buildings, with weight and structure similar to conventional tiles, but adds value to the roof, in addition to providing protection, thermal and acoustic comfort,” he states. Also, depending on the color chosen for the concrete and the selected construction project, the photovoltaic panels become “camouflaged” on the tile surface, matching the building’s design.

About Tégula and Eternit

Tégula, a company that is part of the Eternit Group, is the largest and most renowned manufacturer of concrete roof tile projects in Brazil. Its more than 45 years of experience allows it to offer a 20-year warranty on its products and also hold the title of national leader in the sector.

As mentioned earlier, Tégula is part of the Eternit Group, which combines the expertise of other construction companies and is a reference in projects for sanitary fixtures, metals, and construction solutions.
