Brazilian Army Reinforces Its Arsenal With FGM-148 Javelin Missiles, Advanced US Technology That Played a Crucial Role in the War Between Ukraine and Russia. Check Out the Details of This Acquisition!

The Brazilian Army is close to finalizing the purchase of hundreds of new FGM-148 Javelin missiles, US technology manufactured by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. The arrival of the armament is expected to occur after nearly four years since Brazil made its first purchase request for the US technology. Understand how the new FGM-148 missiles can further modernize the Brazilian Armed Forces.

US Technology Will Equip 1st Mechanized Anti-Tank Company

The FGM-148 Javelin missiles were fundamental for Ukraine to stop the Russian offensive at the beginning of the war in 2022. According to the Army Commander, General Tomás Miguel Ribeiro de Paiva, the Brazilian Army is in negotiations and the US technology will arrive next year or in 2026.

The new FGM-148 Javelin missiles are expected to equip the 1st Mechanized Anti-Tank Company (1st Cia AC Mec), inaugurated on the 16th by General Tomás, who announced the purchase of the new armament.

He also informed that the Land Force should, after completing tests with two prototypes, finalize a contract for the purchase of 98 Centauro II-BR tank hunters. Tomás was accompanied at the unit’s headquarters by the then commander of the Southeast region, General Guido Amin Naves, and his successor, General Pedro Celso Coelho Montenegro. According to Tomás, the Brazilian Army had long sought this US Anti-Tank technology and was able to secure it now with three types of material.

Other New Missiles Acquired by the Brazilian Army

The commander listed the new FGM-148 Javelin, Spike LR2, and Max 1.2 AC missiles. The US technology is a portable anti-tank missile with infrared guidance, meaning it uses a fire and forget system, capable of hitting targets up to 4,000 meters away.

Brazil had made its first purchase request in 2021, but only at the end of 2022 did the US government authorize the sale.

As a result, the Brazilian Army first acquired the Israeli Spike LR-2 missile, whose delivery was also delayed and arrived in the country only this year. The equipment uses the so-called fire, observe, and update system with the help of AI.

Through it, its operator can choose to manually control the entire flight or lock onto the target using AI. In this case, it is still possible to make adjustments during the flight until impact.

According to the commander, these new missiles provide the Brazilian Army with the capability to protect against vehicles, which is very important for any conventional troop worldwide. Added to the 11th Mechanized Infantry Brigade, the 1st Cia AC Mec should have the capacity to be transported anywhere in the national territory by the KC-390 planes of the Brazilian Air Force.

Brazilian Army Is Getting More Equipped With New Technologies

In addition to the new FGM-148 Javelin missiles, the brigade is also set to receive the future Centauro II-BR armored vehicles. Manufactured by the Italians of Consortium Iveco-OTO Melara (CIO), the armored vehicle’s turret is equipped with a 120 mm cannon.

This is a Combat Armored Vehicle (CAV), the purchase of which is part of the modernization project for the country’s armored forces. When operational, it will be the most powerful vehicle of its type in South America.

It will also receive an anti-aircraft battery. According to Tomás, this brigade is expeditionary, and the Brazilian Army has the aeromobile brigade and a mechanized brigade ready to operate anywhere in Brazil. The commander added that the first Centauro vehicles are expected to arrive in 2027 in Brazil.
