State Investment Reignites Tourist Project in Vale do Taquari. The Formalization of the Transfer Details Priority Section Between Muçum and Vespasiano Corrêa, with Restoration of Tracks and Reactivation

The government of Rio Grande do Sul formalized a transfer of R$ 6,340,922.48 to recover part of the line used by the Trem dos Vales, a tourist ride in Vale do Taquari.

The investment plans to restore 18.5 kilometers of tracks between Muçum and Vespasiano Corrêa and marks the resumption of the project after damage associated with extreme weather events recorded in 2024.

The signing of the Fostering Agreement took place at the Palácio Piratini in Porto Alegre on January 29, 2026, with participation from Governor Eduardo Leite, Vice Governor Gabriel Souza, and State Secretary of Tourism, Ronaldo Santini, along with regional leaders and representatives from entities linked to the tourist railway.

Muçum–Viaduto 13 Segment Enters the First Phase of Works

The state resources were directed to the segment that goes from kilometer 12 in Muçum to kilometer 30 in the area of Viaduto 13 in Vespasiano Corrêa.

The agreement defines this stretch as a priority for structural recovery, forecasting gradual reactivation as work stages advance.

The execution was assigned to the Brazilian Association for Railway Preservation, responsible for the technical work on the stretch covered by the agreement.

In practice, the entity takes on the recovery of the permanent way necessary for the tourist transport to operate safely again.

Amturvales and Coordination of Municipalities in Vale do Taquari

The Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Valleys Region participated in coordinating the project with the State and appears as a link between the municipalities involved and the operational structure of the train.

The president of the entity and coordinator of the Trem dos Vales, Rafael Fontana, attributed the formalization of the agreement to a joint effort among Amturvales, ABPF, municipal governments, and the state government.

At the signing event, Fontana also highlighted, in his speech, the relationship between the resumption of the ride and the economic dynamics of the territory, citing a model of tourism connected to local production and the region’s communities.

Recovery Timeline and Resumption of the Ride Still Without Date

Until the formalization of the agreement, there had been no official announcement of dates for the return of the tourist ride.

The definition of a timeline for the return of operations was placed as dependent on the effective beginning of the work and the progress of the planned construction.

An estimate cited after the ceremony indicates that the recovery of the prioritized stretch could be completed in approximately seven months, although the reopening calendar for the public depends on the progress of the work fronts and the technical validations necessary for operation.

The recent history helps to explain the caution with deadlines.

According to reports published after the event at Piratini, the operations of the Trem dos Vales have been suspended since December 2023 due to heavy rains that hit the region, a scenario that was worsened by the climate events of 2024 mentioned by the involved entities.

Railway Tourism and Heritage: Why the Trem dos Vales is Strategic

The Trem dos Vales has consolidated itself as a tourist product associated with Vale do Taquari and the railway heritage of the region.

In its best-known configuration, the ride connects Muçum and Guaporé, covering about 46 kilometers, with an approximate duration of two and a half hours, passing through tunnels and viaducts that integrate the local landscape.

Among the most emblematic points of the route is Viaduto 13, often identified as V13, cited as the highest in Latin America and described as 143 meters tall and 509 meters long in material published after the ceremony.

Commenting on the resumption, the Secretary of Tourism, Ronaldo Santini, stated that the goal is to drive not only tourism but also the productive chain associated with the activity in the region.

On the same occasion, he mentioned state investments in tourist infrastructure in Vale do Taquari through agreements made since 2022.

Infrastructure and Railway Concession Enter the State Debate

During the event, Eduardo Leite stated that the decision to invest in the stretch was made considering the State’s evaluation of federal management in the railway sector under concession.

The governor said that the state government chose to act in the segment where it would have intervention capability, linking the measure to the impacts left by the rains.

The discussion on the next steps also included the expectation of negotiations to enable interventions in areas beyond the stretch covered in this first phase, although the signed agreement specifically addresses the recovery between Muçum and the vicinity of Viaduto 13.

With the formalized agreement, the region now follows two fronts of expectation: the physical reconstruction of the line in the defined segment and the operational organization to reopen the ride to the public when technical conditions and a firm calendar are in place.

The resumption, when it occurs, is likely to place the Trem dos Vales back in the tourist circuit of Rio Grande do Sul while also reinforcing the preservation of a railway heritage that has become vulnerable after recent climatic occurrences.

After a prolonged suspension and with the works finally contracted, what will determine whether the Trem dos Vales returns to operation within the expected timeframe: the speed of the recovery of the tracks or the necessary authorizations and tests to ensure a safe reopening?
