New Savegnago Unit in Indaiatuba Debuts as Pilot Project of 5×2 Journey, Reorganizing 44 Weekly Hours Without Changing the Total Load and Evaluating the Model in Paulista Food Retail.
Supermarket chains in different states are revising the traditional 6×1 schedule in an attempt to facilitate hiring and retaining employees.
In this context, the Savegnago Group opened its first store in Indaiatuba (SP) on November 27, operating the unit as a pilot project of the 5×2 schedule, where employees work five days and rest two, maintaining the 44 weekly hours provided for in labor legislation.
While chains in other regions have already been experimenting with alternative work models, Savegnago’s test brings the topic to the interior of São Paulo, one of the main food retail hubs in the country.

Many employers do not know, but the law guarantees domestic workers a 25% increase in salary during trips, 50% for overtime, 20% for night shifts, and 17 additional benefits that can lead to labor lawsuits if not paid.
The company presents the experience as a pilot limited to the new unit, focusing on operational area employees.
Store in Indaiatuba and Implementation of the 5×2 Schedule
The Indaiatuba unit is located at Avenida Francisco de Paula Leite, No. 926, and is the 63rd store of the Savegnago Supermarkets brand.
According to information released by the chain, the investment was BRL 54.6 million and the opening generated around 180 direct jobs in the city.
The project follows the most recent standard of stores in the group.
The built area is approximately 4,400 m², with 2,400 m² allocated to the sales area.
The structure includes butcher, bakery, produce, wine cellar, healthy products area, gourmet space, and coffee shop sections, as well as 14 traditional checkouts and four self-service terminals.
The parking lot offers spaces for cars and motorcycles in a number compatible with the size of the operation, according to the company. The work model is the main differential tested in the new unit.
The store was presented by the company as a laboratory to assess the adoption of the 5×2 schedule in a real supermarket environment, without altering the weekly load defined by the CLT.
Functioning of the 5×2 Schedule in the Pilot

In the Indaiatuba pilot project, the 44-hour weekly load is preserved but distributed differently from the 6×1 schedule.
Instead of a routine of just over 7 hours per day over six days a week, employees now work daily shifts of about 8h48, with two rest days per week.
The model is focused on operational areas, such as cashiers, replenishment, and service sectors.
According to Savegnago, the proposal is to monitor productivity, absenteeism, turnover, and internal adherence metrics, as well as monitor potential effects on weekend and holiday shift organization.
The chain also states that it intends to observe any impacts on customer service and the need to supplement staffing during peak hours.
The adoption of the 5×2 schedule in other stores, according to the company, will depend on the results of the pilot, and no deadline has been announced for a broader decision.
National Debate on the 6×1 Schedule
The discussion about the 6×1 schedule has gained traction in 2024 and 2025 among unions, business associations, and the academic community.
Research and public debates have begun highlighting the effects of six-day work schedules and just one rest day in sectors with high labor intensity, like supermarkets, atacarejos, and pharmacies.
In commerce and food retail, industry representatives point to the 6×1 schedule as one of the most common ways to organize work, especially to ensure store operation on Sundays and holidays.
In this arrangement, the limit of 44 weekly hours is usually met with daily shifts of just over seven hours.
On the other hand, surveys from labor organizations indicate a predominantly critical perception of the model.
A survey conducted by the Commercial Workers’ Union of Rio de Janeiro, for example, found that more than 90% of participants expressed support for ending the 6×1 schedule, linking it to difficulties in reconciling professional and personal life and to physical and emotional burnout.

At the national level, opinion polls show that reducing working hours and ending the 6×1 schedule are among the main demands of retail workers.
Expansion of the 5×2 Model in Food Retail
The 5×2 schedule is traditional in offices, administrative sectors, and part of the industry, but in recent years it has begun to be tested in retail operations.
The declared objective of companies adopting the model is to make positions more competitive in the eyes of candidates, without altering the hourly limits provided by law.
In this format, employees work five days a week and rest two, still totaling 44 hours in the period.
The adjustment requires longer daily shifts and a redesign of schedules throughout the week, especially on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
Labor relations specialists consulted by sector organizations say that the main challenge in applying the 5×2 model in supermarkets lies in covering peak operation periods, such as weekends.
In contrast, studies from unions and market observatories indicate that more balanced work shifts tend to be associated with lower rates of absenteeism for health reasons and lower intentions of job turnover among workers subjected to the regime.
In the case of Savegnago, the chain’s management has presented the test as part of a personnel management strategy in a scenario described by business associations as one with greater difficulty in hiring and retaining staff in operational positions.
Profile and Expansion of the Savegnago Group
Founded in 1976 in Sertãozinho (SP), the Savegnago Group is now one of the leading supermarket chains in the interior of São Paulo.
In 2025, data from the Abras Ranking placed the company in the 16th position among the largest supermarket chains in the country, with revenue close to BRL 6.9 billion in 2024, according to the sector association and official communications from the company.
The chain is present in about 20 municipalities in the interior of São Paulo and employs, according to recent company information, more than 13,000 employees.
In addition to Savegnago Supermarkets, the group operates Paulistão atacarejo units, gas stations, distribution centers, maintenance centers, shopping centers, convenience units, and an administrative center in Sertãozinho.
In recent years, company announcements and specialized reports have indicated an expansion plan that combines new supermarket stores, growth in atacarejo, and modernization of physical and management structures.
The entry into Indaiatuba fits into this strategy of geographical expansion and will also serve as an internal reference for testing new ways of organizing work shifts.
Reader, do you believe this trend will become a permanent practice in supermarket chains or will it remain restricted to isolated experiences?
