Volkswagen Invests R$ 3 Billion In Paraná To Launch New Hybrid Pickup Based On T-Cross That Will Replace Saveiro After 45 Years And Compete In The Market Between Strada And Toro.

Volkswagen sold the Saveiro in Brazil for 45 years without launching an entirely new pickup. Now, it is preparing an unprecedented successor — which may be called Udara or Tukan — developed on the T-Cross platform, with a hybrid flex engine of about 150 hp and production at the factory in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná, where the automaker is investing R$ 3 billion to compete in a market currently dominated by Fiat Strada, Chevrolet Montana, and Fiat Toro.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian pickup market has evolved rapidly. New models have emerged with more technology, greater payload capacity, and also focused on the audience looking for vehicles for urban use and lifestyle. In 2024, this transformation became evident in the numbers. The Fiat Strada led the national market with 144,684 units sold, becoming the most registered vehicle in Brazil for the second consecutive year. The Saveiro, which operates in the same segment, recorded about 56 thousand units, less than half the volume of its rival.

The difference between the models was not only in the number of sales. It was a technological generational difference. In light of this scenario, Volkswagen decided to take a step that had been postponed for decades: to develop a new pickup from scratch to replace the Saveiro and compete for space with more modern models.

Secret Project VW247: The New Pickup From Volkswagen Based On The MQB-A0 Platform

Internally, the new model received the code VW247. Among the brand’s engineers, it has also been known as A0 Pickup, a direct reference to the MQB-A0 platform, the same used in vehicles such as:

  • Volkswagen Polo
  • Volkswagen Virtus
  • Volkswagen Nivus
  • Volkswagen T-Cross

During initial tests on Brazilian roads, the prototypes were driving with camouflaged bodies of the Tiguan Allspace, a seven-seater SUV. The strategy was to hide the real dimensions and prevent the final shape of the new pickup from being revealed prematurely.

Even so, spy shots began to appear. In August 2025, a test mule was photographed on the Rodovia dos Imigrantes, a route frequently used by automakers because it combines variations in altitude, humid weather, and heavy traffic.

The definitive name has not yet been officially announced. Volkswagen has registered six possibilities with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI):

  • Udara
  • Arena
  • Tukan
  • Acron
  • Airon
  • Tagro

Research conducted with consumers indicated Udara and Tukan as the favorites. A report from the magazine Autoesporte revealed that Tukan is currently the most likely name, following the same strategy the brand used to choose the name of the SUV Tera.

New Volkswagen Pickup Will Focus On Work And Lifestyle

Volkswagen’s global CEO, Thomas Schäfer, explained in an interview that the project for the new pickup was designed to meet two specific demands of the Brazilian market. According to the executive, there is an audience that uses pickups as a working tool, particularly in professional activities. At the same time, there is a growing segment that seeks trucks for everyday use and lifestyle.

The president of Volkswagen in Latin America, Alexander Seitz, confirmed that the model will have versions aimed at professional use, targeting the same audience that currently purchases the Saveiro in direct sales.

This means that the new truck will not just be a direct replacement. It will occupy an intermediate space between the Saveiro and the Amarok, expanding the brand’s presence in the pickup market.

MQB-A0 Platform Shared With T-Cross Will Reduce Production Costs

The choice of the MQB-A0 platform was not by chance. Volkswagen’s factory in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná, already produces the T-Cross SUV using this same architecture. By sharing the structural base, the automaker can:

  • reduce engineering costs
  • reuse industrial infrastructure
  • accelerate vehicle development

According to information published by Mobiauto, the new pickup will share a large part of the front structure with the T-Cross, including:

  • structural steel sheets
  • A and B pillars
  • windshield
  • front suspension
  • brakes
  • powertrain

From the front of the car to the end of the front doors, the two vehicles will be practically identical. Starting from the B pillar, however, the pickup will have an entirely new body. The wheelbase will be increased to about 2.80 meters, allowing for a larger and more robust cargo bed.

The rear suspension will use a rigid axle with leaf springs, a solution typical of utility vehicles and also adopted by the Fiat Strada. The system allows for a higher load capacity. The drive will be front-wheel drive in the initial versions.

Dimensions Position Model Between Fiat Strada And Fiat Toro

The new Volkswagen pickup is expected to measure approximately:

  • 4.75 meters in length
  • 1.76 meters in width

These dimensions place the model exactly between two important categories in the Brazilian market:

  • above the Fiat Strada, leader of compact pickups
  • below the Fiat Toro, which dominates the intermediate segment

This strategy creates an interesting competitive space for Volkswagen to attract customers from both sides of the market.

Hybrid Flex Engine 1.5 TSI With 150 Hp Debuts eTSI Technology In Brazil

One of the technical highlights of the new model will be the 1.5 TSI Evo2 flex engine, which should deliver about 150 horsepower and 25.5 kgfm of torque. The engine will be produced at Volkswagen’s factory in São Carlos (SP), gradually replacing the current 1.4 TSI engine.

The big news is that the model will be the first national car from the brand to use the mild hybrid eTSI system with 48 volts. In this system, a small electric motor assists the combustion engine at specific moments, such as:

  • accelerations
  • restarts
  • energy recovery during braking

The goal is to improve fuel consumption and reduce emissions without requiring external charging. This is a mild electrification that increases energy efficiency without changing the everyday use of the vehicle.

Entry-Level Versions Will Have 1.0 TSI Engine And Manual Transmission

In addition to the hybrid version, the new pickup should also offer more affordable options. The basic versions are expected to use:

  • 1.0 TSI engine with 128 hp
  • manual transmission

These configurations will be directed mainly to:

  • direct sales
  • fleets
  • customers using pickups as a work tool

In the more equipped versions, the transmission is expected to be eight-speed automatic.

Investment Of R$ 3 Billion Modernizes Volkswagen Factory In Paraná

To make the project viable, Volkswagen announced R$ 3 billion in investments at the São José dos Pinhais factory, in Paraná. This amount is part of a larger package of R$ 16 billion allocated to Brazil by 2029, which includes:

  • new flex models
  • hybrid vehicles
  • electric cars

The Paraná unit, inaugurated in 1999, will undergo modernizations to produce the new pickup alongside other models like the T-Cross and Virtus. The adaptation for the MQB Hybrid architecture also prepares the factory for future electrified technologies.

Volkswagen Plans To Export New Brazilian Pickup To More Than 25 Countries

Volkswagen’s strategy is not limited to the domestic market. Starting in 2027, the automaker intends to export the new pickup produced in Brazil to more than 25 countries, focusing primarily on:

  • Latin America
  • Africa
  • emerging markets

The idea follows the same model used with the SUV Tera: develop the vehicle in Brazil, produce locally, and distribute to other markets.

Intermediate Pickup Market Grows Rapidly In Brazil

The moment chosen by Volkswagen to launch the new pickup is not coincidental. The intermediate pickup segment in Brazil grew by about 15% in 2024, driven by models such as:

  • Fiat Toro
  • Chevrolet Montana
  • Ford Maverick

The Fiat Toro dominates the segment with about 40% of sales, offering turboflex and diesel engines. The Chevrolet Montana competes in the intermediate range with a 1.2 turbo engine producing 133 hp.

The Ford Maverick tops the category with a 2.0 turbo engine producing 253 hp. The new Volkswagen pickup is expected to come to market with estimated prices ranging from R$ 120,000 to R$ 180,000, depending on the version.

End Of Saveiro Approaches After More Than 40 Years In The Brazilian Market

Launched in 1982, the Saveiro exceeded 1.5 million units sold in Brazil and survived several generations of Volkswagen vehicles.

Even after the end of models like Gol, Fox, and CrossFox, the pickup remained in production. The current problem is technical. The PQ24 platform that supports the current Saveiro cannot accommodate the new technologies required by the Proconve L8 emissions standards, which will come into effect in the coming years.

Without a deep structural update, the model would not be able to incorporate hybrid systems and other necessary technologies. Although Volkswagen has not yet officially confirmed the cessation of production, the new pickup will have work versions intended to directly replace the Saveiro for this audience.

Launch Of The New Volkswagen Pickup Is Expected Between 2026 And 2027

The official launch of the new Volkswagen pickup is scheduled for the first half of 2026, although some reports suggest a possible delay to early 2027. Regardless of the exact date, the project represents a historic shift for the brand.

After 45 years selling essentially the same pickup concept in Brazil, Volkswagen is finally preparing a completely new model to compete in one of the most competitive segments of the national automotive market.
