Record Seizure Occurred on Federal Highway in Roraima; Suspected to Be Gold Smuggled Abroad
The Federal Highway Police (PRF) seized last Monday (4) a record load of approximately 100 kg of gold hidden in a Hilux pickup truck on the BR-401 highway in Boa Vista, Roraima. Valued at around R$ 62 million, this is the largest gold seizure ever made by the PRF in Brazil, according to information released by the newspaper Estadão.
The seizure occurred during a routine inspection in the Ponte dos Macuxis area. The driver, a 30-year-old man, was traveling with his 32-year-old wife and their nine-month-old child. After noticing irregularities on the vehicle’s dashboard, the agents intensified the inspection and located over 100 bars of pure gold hidden in secret compartments.
How Did the Police Discover the 100 Kg of Gold?
According to agent Rodrigo Magno from the PRF, quoted in a report by the G1 portal, the identification of the load occurred due to the officers’ attention to detail:
-
50 viaducts, 4 tunnels, 28 bridges, and 40 kilometers of bike paths: BR-262 in Espírito Santo will receive 8.6 billion reais for the largest engineering project in the state’s history, inspired by the Immigrant Highway in São Paulo.
-
Brazil produces too much clean energy and doesn’t know what to do with it: over 20% of solar and wind capacity was wasted in 2025 while investors flee and 509 renewable generation projects were abandoned in the last year.
-
Piauí will produce a new fuel that replaces diesel without needing to change anything in the truck’s engine and reduces pollutant gas emissions by half: truck drivers from all over the Northeast are already celebrating the news that will arrive later this decade.
-
A new Brazilian shopping center worth R$ 400 million will be built in an area equivalent to more than 4 football fields, featuring 90 stores, 5 cinemas, a supermarket, a college, and parking for 1,700 cars, potentially generating 3,000 jobs.
“When checking the inside of the car, we noticed signs that some parts had been tampered with. These vehicles usually belong to already mapped routes, but we are always patrolling and alert to identify suspicious behaviors.”
The load, precisely 103 kg, was distributed in over a hundred bars. The vehicle was not registered in the name of the driver, and the PRF is still investigating who the true owner of the car and the seized gold is.
Where Did the Seized Gold Come From and Where Was It Going?
Preliminary investigations by the Federal Police indicate that the material may have originated from illegal mines in Rondônia. The suspicion is that the load was being transported to be smuggled to Venezuela or Guyana, neighboring countries with a history of illegal trading in precious metals.
The driver was arrested in the act and taken to the Federal Police headquarters in Boa Vista, where investigations are ongoing.
Illegal Mining: A Billion-Dollar Market
Illegal mining is a chronic problem in several regions of the Amazon, generating billions of reais per year. According to the Federal Police, Roraima, Pará, and Rondônia are among the Brazilian states most affected by illegal activity, which harms the environment and finances international criminal networks.
Official data indicates that illegally mined gold from the Amazon often leaves the country through clandestine routes, supplying international markets with the complicity of transnational criminal networks.
What Is the Economic Impact of This Seizure?
The seizure of 100 kg of gold amounts, according to the current metal quotation, to a value of approximately R$ 62 million. This amount, if sold illegally, would be used to finance other illicit operations, including drug and arms trafficking.
With actions like this, the Federal Police and the PRF aim to weaken illegal operations and protect the national economy. However, experts warn that clandestine mining is still a challenge far from being overcome, requiring coordinated actions by Brazilian authorities and neighboring countries.
Is It Worth Continually Investing in Smuggling Combat?
For public security experts, intelligence operations and inspections on federal highways are essential to reduce criminal activities involving illegal gold. However, in addition to police operations, it is necessary to strengthen environmental enforcement in extraction areas, preventing crime from occurring at its source.
Do you believe that operations like this are sufficient to curb illegal mining in Brazil? Does this seizure directly impact the gold market? Leave your opinion in the comments — we want to hear from those who experience this firsthand!

Até aparecer um juiz e dizer que a apreensão foi ilegal e liberar o motorista e a carga… Isto é Brasil . A polícia prende e a justiça solta.
