Agreement Between Companies Reinforces Intercontinental Plans to Open Air Freight Routes Through Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft

Destinus, a Swiss aerospace company developing hydrogen-powered aircraft, has partnered with the startup Flapper, a Minas Gerais-based on-demand executive aviation platform. The partnership stipulates that the companies will collaborate to launch hydrogen-powered cargo flights, reinforcing their commitment to intercontinental plans for the opening of future routes for express air freight in Europe and Latin America.

In a statement, Mikhail Kokorich, president of Destinus, stated that Latin America is a key market for the company. Thus, the partnership with Flapper will help Destinus gain direct insight into the express cargo market, as well as explore new route options across the Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, Flapper’s director, Paul Malicki, pointed out that the supply chain disruption caused by the pandemic has placed aviation on the front lines of specialized cargo operations. According to him, by using Destinus’s hydrogen-powered aircraft, the company aims to shorten delivery times for long-distance cargo missions, potentially reducing them to a fraction of what they currently are.

Today, Flapper has a pan-American presence with offices located in Florida (USA), Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Colombia. Its high-value cargo services are concentrated in 5 segments: banking, high-net-worth individuals, diplomacy, mining, and international organizations with special freights. The Minas Gerais-based startup has over a thousand aircraft available for charters in its portfolio, as well as more than 300,000 users on its app.

Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft Aim to Focus on Sustainability

Through the partnership, the companies intend to fix the world in a faster and more sustainable manner. With speeds 5 times greater than today’s fastest conventional airplanes, Destinus promises to create new possibilities for transporting valuable and critical goods.

Moreover, sustainability is another advantage of the business. This is because hydrogen-powered aircraft release zero carbon emissions during flight. Currently, the cargo segment accounts for about 30% of Flapper’s business through international transportation of goods, such as medical equipment, emergency spare parts, banking services, mining, high-end products, and diplomatic items.

Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft Are Not New in the Market

In 2021, Airbus announced the establishment of two Zero Emission Development Centers to create its hydrogen-fueled tank. Located in Nantes, France, and Bremen, Germany, these facilities will aim to leverage the company’s efforts to ensure everything is in place for the launch of the Zero E, the aircraft that will have this engine introduced only in 2035. According to Airbus, the expectation is that the two centers will be 100% operational by 2023, as the aviation company’s goal is to have the Zero E operational by 2025, with its first real prototype.
