In 2024, A Partial Exercise Will Take Place Without Community Involvement
Eletronuclear clarifies that the information regarding the General Integrated Emergency Response and Nuclear Physical Security Exercise being held in 2024 in Angra dos Reis, on the Green Coast of Rio de Janeiro, is not accurate.
The drill, supervised by the Institutional Security Office of the Presidency (GSI/PR) and coordinated by the State Civil Defense Department of Rio de Janeiro, normally takes place every two years, in odd-numbered years – with its last edition in 2023.
In other years, there is the Integrated Partial Exercise for Emergency Response and Nuclear Physical Security, which involves a tabletop exercise, meaning no practical simulated activities near the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Central (CNAAA).

Both exercises aim to evaluate the effectiveness of the response structure, validate plans, identify areas for improvement, and consolidate the procedures outlined in the External Emergency Plan of the State of Rio de Janeiro (PEE/RJ) for the CNAAA, focused on protecting the population, the environment, nuclear plants, and their workers.
Partial Exercise
The next Integrated Partial Exercise for Emergency Response and Nuclear Physical Security will take place from October 30 to November 1, 2024, and will involve professionals from approximately 60 institutions at the federal, state, and municipal levels, who will carry out a series of activities without displacing or involving the local population.
The actions to be verified in this exercise are still being defined by the Nuclear Emergency Response Planning Committee in the Municipality of Angra dos Reis (Copren/AR).
General Exercise
The 29th edition of the General Integrated Emergency Response and Nuclear Physical Security Exercise took place from August 15 to 18 last year and brought together hundreds of professionals across the three levels of government: municipal, state, and federal.
More than 1,300 military personnel from the Brazilian Navy, Brazilian Army, and Brazilian Air Force participated. This is a complex operation that involves various civil and military entities and the execution of practical activities such as activating the alert and alarm system via sirens, air medical evacuation of a radiological accident victim to the Naval Hospital Marcílio Dias in Rio de Janeiro, distribution of potassium iodide kits, land and sea evacuation of some residents, collection of soil, air, water, and vegetation samples, among others.

Great content! The list of tools at the end was a lovely bonus.
