The Fugro company announced the completion of its first remote offshore integrity inspection operation in the North Sea region.

The operation was carried out for the Dutch operator TAQA Holanda, guaranteeing all the necessary data for the security of the company's campaign.

The inspections were carried out using the Fugro Orca Blue Essence unmanned surface platform (USV), with the Blue Volta remotely operated electric vehicle (eROV).

The project involved inspecting two platforms and over 40 kilometers of pipeline in one of the busiest spots in the North Sea.

According to the company Fugro, the operation ensured the inspection of seabed mobility, the depth of the pipelines and measurements of cathodic protection in the area.

In this way, the use of the Blue Essence USV remote offshore inspection platform guaranteed TAQA Holanda the integrity of its assets.

Gordon Kennedy, Regional Director of Maritime Asset Integrity at Fugro, said: “I am very proud of the successful collaboration with TAQA and the Dutch authorities that made this research possible.”

“Fugro is committed to developing new remote and autonomous technologies that will accelerate the transition to safer, cleaner inspections and more efficient geographic data acquisition.”

The expert concluded by highlighting the use of the Blue Essence USV as one of the big bets for the future of the offshore support market on the global stage.

Data acquired by the offshore inspection operation with the Blue Essence USV was accessed in real time by the company and TAQA Netherlands

According to the companies, during operations, the Blue Essence USV and Blue Volta eROV were remotely controlled via satellite link by operators at Fugro's remote operations centers (ROC) in the Netherlands and in Aberdeen.

The data collected in the operation was accessed in real time by the companies, allowing greater control over the integrity of TAQA Holanda's assets.

Additionally, TAQA's unmanned integrity inspection of offshore assets and pipelines in the Dutch North Sea resulted in 95% lower CO₂ emissions.

It needed only 5% of the usual amount of fuel, thus allowing a minimization of polluting gas emissions.

René Zwanepol, Country Manager of TAQA Netherlands, highlighted the company's satisfaction with the success of the offshore operation.

He further said that this is definitely the way forward for future campaigns. The innovative approach could ensure the success of many future inspection campaigns.

With the use of the Blue Essence USV, Fugro will be able to expand the quality of operation for the Dutch TAQA to several other companies in the offshore sector.
