Master’s in Scientific Communication: What You Need to Know
The Academic Master’s in Science, Technology, and Health Communication offered by the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz (COC), one of Fiocruz’s units, focuses on training researchers capable of strengthening the dialogue between science and society.
According to Fiocruz, the program is ideal for those who wish to understand and improve scientific communication strategies and their impact on society.
The program offers a total of 48 credits and must be completed within a minimum period of 12 and a maximum of 24 months.
During the course, students will be challenged to develop innovative actions for scientific dissemination, as well as create new ways of interaction between the public and research institutions.
Research Lines: Three Areas to Explore
Within the master’s program, students can choose among three complementary research lines.
According to the announcement, these areas of study seek to expand the understanding of how science and society interact with each other. They are:
- Scientific Culture and Society: A critical approach to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and its interactions with the environment, health, and technology.
- Education, Communication, and Mediation: Focused on how education and communication influence the way science is presented and understood in different social contexts.
- Audience Studies: Analyzes the characteristics of the audiences involved in scientific dissemination activities, using elements from sociology and museology.
Positions and Inclusion Policy
For the selection process for 2025, 15 spots are available, distributed among the aforementioned research lines.
According to Fiocruz’s ordinance (PR Fiocruz 491/2021), there is a reserve of spots to ensure the inclusion of historically underrepresented groups. This includes:
- 7% of the spots for people with disabilities;
- 20% of the spots for candidates who self-declare as black (both black and brown);
- 3% of the spots for indigenous people.
These measures reinforce Fiocruz’s commitment to diversity and equality of opportunities in the academic environment.
How to Apply and Selection Process
Applications are now open and will close on October 14, 2024, and are completely free.
Interested candidates must apply online by accessing the Integrated Teaching System Fiocruz (SIEF).
The selection process consists of five stages, each designed to assess the skills and potential of the candidates:

- Remote Written Exam: Exam on current topics in scientific dissemination, with a minimum required score of 7.0;
- Evaluation of the Research Proposal: Assessment of the research proposal, with a score between 1 and 10;
