Volkswagen Multinational Is Not At All Pleased With The Electric Copy Of The Beetle Made Outrageously By Great Wall Motors
The Chinese industry has still not abandoned some old habits, and the Volkswagen multinational is not at all flattered by the electric car manufacturer ORA, which is part of the Great Wall Motors group. The brand presented a clone of the Beetle at the Shanghai Auto Show. Named ORA Punk Cat at the time, the vehicle has the same features as the iconic car from VW. Even after this major controversy reported by Click Oil and Gas in April this year, the Chinese automaker is steadfast in its decision to launch the clone of the iconic Beetle, the former Punk Cat.

Now named Ballet Cat, the electric clone of Volkswagen’s iconic Beetle will be shown in more detail at the Chengdu Auto Show, taking place on August 29.
Looking at the images, it’s clear that it features very similar lines to the Beetle – not to say that it blatantly copied – not to mention the interior, equipped with a steering wheel and finishing reminiscent of the old beetle. The difference, in addition to the entire package of equipment, which should be robust, is the electric motorization, already confirmed by Great Wall.

Despite the retro vibe, the interior of the Ballet Cat offers a multimedia screen and a central console in balance. However, the creation of this car with a “time machine feel,” as stated by ORA, did not please Volkswagen at all.
Volkswagen Plans To Take Legal Action Against The Ballet Cat
If it reaches the market, however, the Chinese “Electric Beetle” is expected to face legal issues. This is because Volkswagen is already considering investigating whether there is plagiarism in the project development since the appearance of another Beetle clone, the Punk Cat, revealed by Great Wall in April at the Shanghai Auto Show, which bears a closer resemblance to the modern Beetle, whose production ended in 2019 in Germany.
Don’t expect to see a Beetle like that for the price of an electric model from JAC Motors, for example. The car will be expensive, but under Chinese rules, it should not exceed 300,000 yuan or R$ 244.9 thousand, the ceiling for electric car subsidies there.
Even models that seek to rival Tesla, such as NIO’s ET7, have prices starting below this threshold. Would you buy this electric Beetle from Great Wall?
It’s Not The First Time The Chinese Have Created Clones
As if that weren’t enough, another Chinese automaker, SongSang Motors, has cloned the iconic Kombi, will it cause “more trouble”? Unlike the original model manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen, which had a more prominent front horn and the pneumatic help at the back was externally locked, located right in the center. The SS Summer, a van with a retro design clearly based on the Volkswagen Kombi or Type 2, as seen below.
The clone of the iconic Kombi is nearly 5 meters long and adds the possibility of elevating the interior height through the removable roof concept, as was done with the old VW Kombi equipped by Westfalia. Because when it came to copying, the Chinese completed it.
Its motor is hybrid and consists of an electric engine and a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, with which it achieves a combined power of 320 hp, with a range of 550 km (according to the manufacturer).
This “beauty” is not cheap for Western pockets: it has a price of 288,000 yuan (about R$ 45,000), and the first deliveries of this model will be made in 2022.
Volkswagen Was Not The Only “Hostage” Of The Chinese, The SongSang Motors Also Shamelessly Cloned The First-Generation Chevrolet Corvette
It is not the first time that SongSang Motors has taken a risk with a copy, last year it revealed at the Beijing Motor Show the SS Dolphin model, which is shamelessly a copy of the first-generation Chevrolet Corvette.
Many saw it as a kind of tribute, bringing an iconic model into this era, but with electric power.
