The future of Green Hydrogen in Brazil is advancing in the Northeast, mainly in the states of Bahia, Pernambuco and Ceará. Millions are expected to be invested in fuel production.

the states of Bahia, Pernambuco and Ceará, in the Northeast region, are the main focus of negotiations to strengthen the production and export of green hydrogen in the country. O Green Hydrogen Summit, from CartaCapital, received for its last table representatives and managers involved in the discussions after dealing with the panorama of Brazil in relation to the international scenario and government and business investments in the sector. O Pecém Industrial and Port Complex, in Ceará, gained prominence by creating the Green Hydrogen HUB, still in the last year, with the state government and in partnership with Brazilian companies.

100% of the Green Hydrogen produced in Ceará will be exported to Europe

According to the commercial manager of Complexo do Pecém, Alessandra Grangeiro, the company is working on the installation of a pilot project with EDP, called a living laboratory, to advance the Green Hydrogen economy.

The project in the Northeast has a 3 MW solar plant and an electrolyser module with a production capacity of 250 Nm3/h of H2 with a guarantee of renewable origin. The initial idea of fuel of the future generated in Complexo do Pecém is to destine all exports, in the beginning, to Europe.

In the month of May, the Pecem Complex was the only Brazilian company to participate in the World Rider and Summit, in Rotterdam, according to the manager. The event featured global investors from various sectors in the Netherlands. Still according to Alessandra, the objective is to generate experiences and knowledge in all the links of the value chain of the green hydrogen.

Bahia will receive US$ 120 million in investments

The Camaçari Complex, in the state of Bahia, has a project under development by Unigel to install a green hydrogen factory, with the projected start of activities as early as next year. The estimated investment in the project is around US$ 120 million, with the objective of generating a production capacity of 10 thousand tons per year.

According to the superintendent of the Secretariat for Economic Development of Bahia, Paulo Guimarães, currently, the main focus is to serve the domestic market, be it hydrogen to be consumed industrially in Camaçari, or ammonia to be consumed for the generation of fertilizers and, simultaneously, supply the demand of the external market, if there is demand.

Guimarães emphasizes that it is already being discussed with other companies for the installation of renewable fuel production projects. This is a demand that should be faster.

The airline market and the maritime market are starting to demand green ethanol and aviation fuel, thus, it is a focus that one of these companies is talking to Bahia. The Camaçari Complex, in the Northeast, is also starting to discuss the issue of green steel and fertilizers, as it has mining projects being developed in Bahia.

Pernambuco has 224 companies installed

In the state of Pernambuco, the Port of Suape establishes the green hydrogen production in a development and qualification research sector through the innovation cluster. According to Suape's Environment and Sustainability director, Carlos Cavalcanti, the company is very interested in exporting.

This strategy is second plan from the point of view of what is expected by Pernambuco, that consumption can take place locally, because it has about 224 companies installed in an industrial port complex.

The executive points out that the second strategy that gave the fastest result from the point of view of the installation was the research and development and innovation projects, which has, as an anchor, the tech-hub.
