The Oldest Chicken In The World Is Impressive Because It Challenges Known Standards Of Animal Longevity And Attracts Public Curiosity. This Type Of Record Shows How Factors Such As Environment, Care And Adaptation Can Prolong The Life Of An Animal That, On Average, Does Not Exceed Ten Years

Have you ever wondered how old the oldest chicken in the world is? Well, know that this topic sparks curiosity and draws the attention of both specialists and the public.

After all, a chicken with many years of life is a rare feat that defies the life expectancy normally associated with these birds.

Oldest Chicken In The World

A woman’s pet chicken in the United States has been officially named the oldest in the world by the Guinness World Records, at 14 years and 69 days old.

Sonya Hull, a resident of Texas, said she hatched the chicken, Pearl, in her personal incubator on March 13, 2011.

Pearl’s journey, the oldest chicken in the world, has not been simple.

She has already broken her leg while fleeing from a raccoon, faced attacks from other chickens, and survived bouts of chickenpox and pneumonia. Today, at 14 years old, she suffers from arthritis that causes her to lean to one side.

Still, she remains strong and well cared for. Her owner said the bird has always shown resilience. “She has been through a lot,” she said.

Despite all the difficulties, Pearl became a record holder for the Guinness World Records.

From Hierarchy To House Comfort

According to Hull, Pearl was born small and always held the lowest position in the chickens’ hierarchy.

Therefore, when she aged and began to move more slowly, the family decided to take her out of the coop.

Thus, Pearl gained a space inside the house, where she spends her retirement years.

She spends most of her time in the laundry room, beside a mop that has become her best companion.

But she does not miss a chance to visit the living room, watch TV, and receive neck scratches.

Small Pleasures And Animated Routine

Even with physical limitations, Pearl maintains habits that show her joy.

Every morning, she plays with cherry tomatoes and fresh grapes, her favorite foods.

She also enjoys exploring the yard under supervision, always on the lookout for slugs.

Hull believes these moments keep the chicken active. “She still tries to live as if she were younger and seems to enjoy it,” she stated.

Her longevity is surprising because, according to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, laying hens live on average from six to eight years.

Part Of The Family

Pearl has carved out a space in the hearts of those who live with her. Hull explains that the grandchildren love to pet her and are not afraid to approach.

The chicken does not peck at anyone and enjoys having her neck scratched. This docile behavior has made her seen as another family member.

Her worldwide fame, on the other hand, has not changed anything about her routine. “She doesn’t seem bothered by it at all,” said her owner.

What Science Says About Chickens’ Average Lifespan

Science shows that a chicken’s life expectancy varies according to its breed, environment, and purpose of rearing.

  • Commercial Laying Hens: In intensive systems, they live on average from 6 to 8 years, but most do not reach that age because they are discarded after a few years of egg production when efficiency declines.
  • Chickens Raised As Pets Or In Protected Environments: They can exceed 10 years.
  • Academic Studies: Universities related to animal science, such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison, reinforce that the biological average is around 6 to 8 years for common domestic birds.
