The GasLub Pole Should Process Daily, As Soon As It Is in Full Operation, About 21 Million Cubic Meters (m³) of Pre-Salt Gas from the Santos Basin, Which Represents 20% of Consumption Here in Brazil.
The ceremony marking the start of the operational tests of the GasLub Pole of Petrobras, in Itaboraí (formerly Comperj), took place this Monday (31) with the presence of the President of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro.
Also present on the occasion were Petrobras President Joaquim Silva e Luna; the Governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro; the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque; the Mayor of Itaboraí, Marcelo Delaroli; among other authorities.
The GasLub Pole is expected to start receiving, still this year, natural gas from the pre-salt, an important step for the operation of the Natural Gas Processing Unit (UPGN).

In an official speech, Jair Bolsonaro stated that the Federal Government considers these investments important at this time so that in the future fuels can be made cheaper in the country.
“We must seek self-sufficiency in everything that is necessary, and energy is the most important. Petrobras is truly the company that can pursue this. These issues are not resolved overnight. And our concern is to seek this energy,” said the president.
Alongside ministers and in front of the Petrobras employees present at the event, Bolsonaro asked God to enlighten the workers against possible corruption.
“I ask God to enlighten each one of you so that we can truly say that we have no risk of manipulations or fraud. We have the power to change the destiny of Brazil. It just takes each citizen to do a little more than what is their duty. And Petrobras is a great example of this,” Bolsonaro stated at the GasLub Pole.

‘Rich Gas’ Marks Initial Testing Stage at the GasLub Pole in Itaboraí
The GasLub Pole begins receiving unprocessed natural gas, known as “rich gas,” from the Cabiúnas Terminal. Once the Natural Gas Processing Unit is fully operational, in addition to gas from the Santos Basin’s pre-salt, it will also receive gas from other assets that use the Integrated Flow System. All of this through the Integrated Route 3 Project.
The Natural Gas Processing Unit, which is part of the Integrated Route 3 Project, also includes a gas pipeline. Once completed, the project will have the capacity to flow and process 21 million cubic meters of natural gas per day from the Santos Basin’s pre-salt, according to Petrobras.
Will the GasLub Pole Reduce Comperj’s Losses?
The start of gas reception tests at the GasLub Pole represents the resumption of what was once the Petrochemical Complex of Rio de Janeiro (Comperj), whose works began in 2006 and resulted in a loss of R$ 28.3 billion for Brazilian society, accounting for corruption cases involving Petrobras. In total, the enterprise spans 45 km².
It is unclear exactly how much would be needed to complete the entire Comperj. According to experts’ analysis, more than US$ 5.3 billion (R$ 17.1 billion) would be necessary to finish the construction. According to the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), the losses to Petrobras concerning Comperj amount to R$ 12.5 billion, combined with the situations of corruption within Petrobras.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, also present at the event at the GasLub Pole, stated that Petrobras has been able to increase oil and gas production.
“If today the world is experiencing a supply and demand crisis, we, Mr. President, have increased the country’s oil exports due to the 286% increase in production during two years of pandemic,” said Albuquerque, who also believes that the pole will increase the gas flow capacity from the Brazilian pre-salt.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Institutional Relations and Sustainability at Petrobras, Rafael Chaves, caught attention with a strong speech attacking the Workers’ Party (PT) and praising the current Federal Government.
“I will not fail to testify about the mismanagement and corruption that was established in this company during the PT administration. Here on our uniform, it is written ‘protection against fire and electric shock’; it should have ‘protection against corruption’ written underneath, which was practiced at that time,” Chaves said, pointing to his uniform.
Rafael Chaves joined Petrobras in 2019, at the start of Jair Bolsonaro’s presidency. In December 2021, he replaced the diplomat Roberto Ardenghy, who was considered to have a technical profile, in the new Institutional Relations Directorate of the company.
