Samarco’s Plant Resumption in Anchieta Comes with an Early Reopening and Creation of 3,000 Jobs in Espírito Santo.

Samarco is about to mark a new chapter in its journey with the reopening of its second pelletizing unit in Anchieta, Espírito Santo. Although the return of the Samarco plant was initially expected for early 2025, operations may begin as early as September or October 2024. This reopening is a significant milestone for the local economy, promising to generate up to 3,000 new jobs, including 600 direct positions already in the hiring phase. This initiative not only reinforces Samarco’s commitment to economic recovery but also promises a positive impact on the lives of many people and communities around.

Economic Impact of the Resumption of the Samarco Plant

Each Samarco plant that resumes operations has a significant impact on the economy of Espírito Santo.

According to Durval Vieira de Freitas, consultant and CEO of DVF Consulting, each unit represents about 1.6% of the state’s GDP.

“Each plant purchases about R$ 600 million to R$ 800 million per year”, Freitas explained. The economic impact is evident, especially considering that Samarco’s four plants in Anchieta were inactive between 2015 and 2020 due to the dam rupture in Mariana, Minas Gerais.

Samarco began its resumption of operations in December 2020, operating at 26% of its capacity.

Since then, the company has gradually expanded its production, using new technologies and a dry filtration system, without disposing of waste in dams. Currently, the company operates at 30% of its total capacity.

Expansion and Investments

With the reopening of the second plant, Samarco plans to reach 60% of its production capacity.

This advancement is an important step in the company’s business plan, aiming to achieve 100% capacity by 2028.

To reach this goal, Samarco is investing R$ 1.6 billion, which will allow production to expand to approximately 15 million tons per year.

Sérgio Mileipe, Operations Director of Samarco, emphasized the importance of this gradual growth.

“We are proceeding with a gradual recovery according to our business plan and commitment to society. Returning to operate safely and consciously is a way to show that we are converging efforts for the development of the state,” Mileipe stated.

Job Creation

Samarco’s expansion will have a direct impact on job creation. Currently, the company has around 3,880 employees, including direct and contracted workers in Espírito Santo.

With the resumption of the second plant and the expansion of operations, Samarco anticipates the creation of up to 3,000 new job positions, including 600 direct vacancies.

The hiring process has been underway since 2024, prioritizing former employees of the company.

The company is also focused on recruiting residents from surrounding communities and individuals from marginalized groups, such as women, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals. This focus aims to promote inclusion and diversity in the workplace.

Training and Inclusion Programs at the Samarco Plant

In addition to creating direct job vacancies, Samarco is investing in training programs to prepare the local workforce.

An example is the training program currently underway in communities near the company’s operations, both in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.

So far, around 440 people have been trained, with a total investment of R$ 2.1 million.

The company is also investing in hiring interns and trainees as a way to strengthen the development of new talents and support professional training in the region.

The resumption of the Samarco plant represents a significant advancement for the economy of Espírito Santo and for the industrial sector of the region.

With significant investments and the creation of thousands of new jobs, the company is contributing to the local economic recovery and offering new opportunities for the population.
