Natural Gas Açu (GNA) Plans to Build Renewable Energy Projects Platform in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The Project Promises to Generate More Visibility for the Clean Energy Sector.
During a meeting with the Economic Development Secretariat of the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro last Thursday (12/22), Gás Natural Açu (GNA), a joint venture formed by Prumo, bp, Spic Brasil, and Siemens, announced its plans to finance the construction of a platform for development of future renewable energy projects.
Benefited Companies Must Invest 2% of Variable Cost Related to Fuel
According to the consortium, the initiative was only possible due to the state decree 45.308/2015, regulated in September of this year, which grants special tax treatment for electricity generation plants.
In accordance with the decree, companies benefiting from the tax exemption on the purchase of natural gas must invest at least 2% of the variable cost related to fuel in renewable energy projects as an energy compensation mechanism.

National energy dilemma: Brazilians support clean energy but reject increases in tariff costs to finance the sustainable transition.
These funds may also be used for energy conservation projects in public buildings, monuments of tourist interest, public lighting, or studies on the energy sector of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
According to Governor Cláudio Castro, the installation of this initiative demonstrates once again how his work has expanded and facilitated business opportunities, attracting new investments that contribute to the recovery of the state’s economy. The new tool was built by the IAG-Business School of PUC/RJ, named Marketplace Solar.
The objective of the new platform is to connect consumers wishing to invest in distributed solar generation, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, with suppliers of equipment, land, materials, and the entire chain necessary for project feasibility.
Platform Will Provide More Visibility to Renewable Energy Projects in RJ
According to what was highlighted by the Secretary of Economic Development, Energy, and International Relations, Cássio Coelho, taking an initiative of this magnitude from paper will further stimulate the improvement of energy efficiency and the generation of renewable energy, which is cheap and clean in Rio de Janeiro, generating various benefits for the fluminense economy.
The development of the new platform represents the first project within the energy compensation mechanism. From the perspective of GNA’s Regulatory Director, Guilherme Penteado, the company proudly announces this partnership, also congratulating the Government of Rio de Janeiro for the approval of this decree for the development of new businesses from renewable sources in the state.
GNA’s operating strategy focuses on energy generation with support for local development and the generation of shared value. It is through this model that its upcoming projects will be structured.
The business platform was created to provide more visibility to renewable energy projects in Rio de Janeiro, boosting new businesses and attracting new investments to Rio de Janeiro, according to João Ferreira, Manager of New Business at PUC/RJ.
TAG and GNA Sign Agreement to Connect Porto do Açu
GNA signed a commitment letter with the Associated Gas Carrier (TAG) to develop feasibility studies for the Goytacazes pipeline.
The infrastructure may make the logistical integration of GNA’s thermoelectric power generation park feasible, at the Porto do Açu, in São João da Barra (RJ), to TAG’s natural gas transportation network.
TAG will be responsible for the technical studies and feasibility of the project, which includes a 45 km bidirectional pipeline capable of receiving up to 10 million m³ per day of natural gas and delivering to the port complex up to 12 million m³/day, with capacity for future expansions up to 18 million.
