The automotive industry is always evolving, and Hyundai has just taken this transformation to a new level. The company’s Mobility Technology division, known as Hyundai Mobis, has launched an innovative hardware suite: the eCorner.
This technology, which allows a car’s wheels to rotate up to 90 degrees, promises to revolutionize not only how we park but also how we move around cities. Let’s dive into this novelty!
The Idea Behind the eCorner
Although the eCorner was revealed for the first time in 2021, its overall concept has been in development since 2018. The differential is that Hyundai Mobis has now applied this technology to a specific model, the Hyundai Onix 5, to demonstrate its full potential.

The eCorner is basically a base of four wheels capable of turning the tires up to 90 degrees. This enables a series of unprecedented maneuvers: parallel parking with ease, moving laterally, and even making turns on a fixed point, practically in the same spot. It’s as if the car dances on the road!
Adaptation to Electric Cars
Hyundai emphasizes that this technology is especially suitable for compact and mid-size electric cars, as well as SUVs. The eCorner module can be customized to fit perfectly into the vehicle’s design without taking up unnecessary space.
An interesting point is that Hyundai Mobis chose not to incorporate motors in the wheels themselves. This could add unsprung weight to the assembly, compromising the vehicle’s comfort and driveability. The focus now is to develop a “skateboard platform” with four eCorner modules by 2023 and integrate autonomous driving technology by 2025.
