Being the Second Most Consumed Alcoholic Beverage by Brazilians, Second Only to Beer, Cachaca Is Winning Over Consumers from Various Parts of the World. Last Year, Exports of the Beverage Leapt, Hitting a Record Not Seen in Twelve Years.

The exported value for the year 2022 was around US$ 20.8 million, according to data from ComexStart (Ministry of Economy), compiled by the Brazilian Institute of Cachaca (IBRAC), which shows an increase of about 52.8% compared to 2021. In volume, this increase was 29.03%, totaling around more than 9.3 million liters. Last year, cachaca was exported to more than 75 countries, with the main ones being: United States, Germany, Portugal, France, and Italy.

“In 2021, we were already moving towards a recovery, overcoming part of the losses caused by the closures of bars and restaurants worldwide and the prohibition of alcoholic beverage sales due to Covid-19. In 2022, we not only resumed but also exceeded the balance of 2019 and the last twelve years. When we look at other spirits, we still have a long way to go, but this growth demonstrates that we are on the right track and also the potential that Cachaca has in the international market. A beverage that presents itself as a new consumption option, one of the most versatile, used not only as a cocktail base but in various ways of appreciation, full of history and which, in the case of aged ones, carries the richness and characteristics of Brazilian wood,” explains the Executive Director of IBRAC, Carlos Lima. 

All this success is the result of the efforts of companies that have been investing in the international market over the years, in strategic actions, such as the Sectoral Project: “Cachaca: Taste the New, Taste Brazil,” which was conducted by the Brazilian Agency for Promotion of Exports and Investments (ApexBrasil) in partnership with IBRAC. 

“The Sectoral Project aims to expand the export base and consolidate recognition of Cachaca as a quality Brazilian spirit that is competitive internationally. The PEIEX Agro Cachaca aims to qualify companies to start exporting, adjusting their product, packaging, and understanding the different demands of each market. So, it is an integration of different services from the Agency, developed in partnership with the sector, that forms a complete link in the chain, from training to the beginning of exportation,” explains Paula Soares, the Manager of Agribusiness at ApexBrasil. 

The Product’s Potential

The company Cachaça Sagrada, along with IBRAC, began to take part in the Project “Cachaca: Taste the New, Taste Brazil” last year. In September, they participated in a business round with some potential buyers from France and Portugal conducted under the Sectoral Project and with support from the Brazilian Embassies in those countries. According to the commercial manager of Cachaça Sagrada, Lucas Pereira, all negotiations are still ongoing and the company remains optimistic. 

“Thanks to IBRAC and the ApexBrasil Project, we are learning a lot about the external market and the potential of our product. In 2023, our focus will be to expand and export more, conquering Europe and other Asian countries,” he states.
