Great Place To Work Reveals The List Of The Best Oil And Gas Companies Of 2022

Flexible Hours And Mental Well-Being Are Highlights Among Award-Winning Companies

May/2023 – The Great Place To Work, a global consultancy with the mission of building a better society by transforming each organization into a “Great Place To Work for All”, announces for the first time the  Best Highlighted Oil and Gas Companies 2022.

The research was conducted in two stages: quantitative – requiring that the company reaches the minimum sample of employees and obtains a score of 70% or higher. Once the conditions of the 1st stage are met, the process moves to filling out certification and ranking questionnaires. After the company’s Certification, only the final score of the climate survey is considered for calculating the final score of the companies on the Highlighted Oil and Gas list.

The first edition of the ranking had 69 registered companies, representing together 16,427 employees. This year, 15 companies were awarded, with 5 companies from the Value Chain/Extraction/Distribution and 10 from the Transportation and Logistics sector.

Among the profile of employees working in the winning companies, 35% are between 35 to 44 years old; 31% are between 26 to 34; 16% are between 45 to 54; 12% are up to 25, and 7% are over 55. The education level indicated that 52% have completed high school or less, 21% have completed higher education, 14% have incomplete higher education, and 12% have post-graduate degrees. Regarding the gender of employees, 79% of the companies are composed of men and 21% of women.

In high leadership positions, 85% are held by men and 15% by women; in middle leadership, men represent 78% and women 22%; and in other positions, 71% are held by men and 29% by women. Among the 10 awarded companies, the average age of the presidents is around 53 years, the average tenure in the position is 6 years, and no woman holds the position. The study also highlighted that the average time of existence (establishment) of the awarded companies is 65 years.

Regarding the human resources sector, 33% of the winning companies indicated that they have 1 to 5 employees in the human resources area, and 27% reported growth in the human resources area of the organizations. Companies also found that on average they provide up to 7 days for onboarding (27%), 135 hours for formal training, and 63% of the institutions indicated that they formally assess the performance of their employees.

ESG Practices, D&I, and Benefits

Other numbers worth highlighting are related to ESG and D&I practices: 60% of the awarded companies indicated that they have hybrid working hours, none of the awarded companies indicated that they offer the practice of reducing working hours without reducing salary, 80% of companies offer maternity/paternity leave for same-sex families, and 47% indicated that they provide flexible hours for employees in the organization.

Meanwhile, 53% have someone responsible for combating discrimination and promoting diversity and/or inclusion, none have a permanent lactation room dedicated exclusively for this use, and 27% offer leave to care for a sick child or relative.

Furthermore, 27% of the companies have structured ESG strategies, policies, and/or practices (Environment/Social/Governance), 20% have specific programs aimed at hiring and including minority groups, and 7% offer additional stability for the dismissal of new parents beyond the minimum required by law. None of the companies have daycare centers or nurseries at the workplace or nearby. 73% of the awarded organizations indicated that they have adopted practices related to mental health and well-being in the last 20 months.

Regarding benefits, 33% of the companies in the ranking offer language courses, 20% coaching, and provide scholarships for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, 13% provide funds for employees to choose where to use, 7% have corporate universities, 20% offer reimbursements or funds for gym use, 7% offer unpaid sabbatical leave, and 10% of employees were promoted.

Regarding turnover and factors for staying in the company, 2% of employees left voluntarily. The dismissal turnover represented about 5% of total dismissals during the period, and 11% of the people comprising the awarded companies’ workforce were hired in the last 12 months.

When asked about the reasons for staying in the oil and gas sector, 38% of employees responded opportunity for growth, 14% alignment of values, 32% quality of life, 14% compensation and benefits, and 2% job stability.

In terms of trust by dimensions, 91% believe in the credibility of leaders to manage people and run the business in general, 89% trust in leaders’ respect in relation to employees, both professionally and personally, 89% trust in the impartiality of leaders in relation to all employees, 94% feel proud to exercise their profession and work for the company, and 93% believe in camaraderie among colleagues and the presence of team spirit.

Employee Statements About The Work Environment

The statements with which employees of the awarded companies most agreed in the survey are: “people are treated well regardless of their color or ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and age” (98%), “this is a physically safe place to work” (97%), “I am proud to tell others that I work here” (97%), “managers are honest and ethical in conducting business” (96%), and “when you enter this organization, they make you feel welcome” (96%).

On the other hand, the statements with the lowest agreement are: I believe that the amount I receive as profit-sharing from the organization is fair” (73%), “managers avoid favoritism” (82%), “people here are adequately paid for the work they do” (78%), “managers involve people in decisions that affect their activities and work environment” (81%), and “we have different benefits here” (82%).
