Chinese Group Expands Presence in the Northeast: New Investment from State Grid, Through CPFL Renováveis, in Solar Energy in Rio Grande do Norte Boosts Jobs, Local Economy and Renewable Sources
On December 22, 2025, the Chinese group State Grid, through CPFL Renováveis, confirmed a investment of R$ 800 million in solar energy in Rio Grande do Norte, expanding its presence in the renewable energy sector and strengthening the local economy. The announcement was made during an official meeting with the State Government and involves the implementation of new photovoltaic projects integrated with existing wind farms.
The investment reinforces the prominence of Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil’s clean energy matrix and is expected to generate around a thousand direct jobs during the installation phase, in addition to positive indirect impacts on services, commerce, and regional infrastructure.
Investment from Chinese Group State Grid Strengthens the Solar Energy Sector in RN
The new investment announced by the Chinese group State Grid represents a strategic step in diversifying the energy matrix of Rio Grande do Norte. The company already has 843.3 megawatts of installed capacity in the state, which corresponds to 61% of the group’s wind generation assets in Brazil.

Copel boosts solar energy in Paraná and brings innovation to public schools, promoting savings on electricity bills, energy efficiency, and a direct impact on the quality of education.
With the expansion into solar energy, the company will leverage already established areas and structures, reducing operational costs and accelerating project implementation. This strategy enhances the state’s competitiveness in the national and international clean energy landscape.
Meeting with the Government of Rio Grande do Norte Formalizes New Investments
The confirmation of the investment in solar energy occurred during a meeting between executives of the Chinese group State Grid and the governor of Rio Grande do Norte, Fátima Bezerra. The business delegation was led by Sun Peng, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Chinese group CPFL Energia, one of the largest global companies in the renewables sector.
Also participating in the meeting were Zha Hong, director of environment and governance at CPFL Renováveis, Xinjian Chen, president of CPFL Renováveis Brazil and Generation, as well as representatives from the group’s institutional and technical areas. From the state government, strategic department secretaries were present, reinforcing institutional alignment to enable the investment.
Solar Energy Will Be Integrated with Existing Wind Farms
The new solar energy projects from the Chinese group State Grid will be implemented in municipalities that already concentrate wind assets, such as Touros, João Câmara, Pedra Preta, and Parazinho. The integration between the two sources allows for better utilization of the transmission infrastructure and increases generation throughout the day.
This approach reduces additional environmental impacts and optimizes land use, which are relevant factors for licensing and social acceptance of the projects in Rio Grande do Norte.
Job Creation and Economic Impact of State Grid Investment
The R$ 800 million investment in solar energy is expected to generate approximately a thousand direct jobs during the installation phase, in addition to indirect opportunities in transport, maintenance, food, and specialized services. These jobs are likely to primarily benefit municipalities in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte.
In addition to generating income, the projects contribute to:
- Professional training of the local workforce
- Increased municipal revenue
- Strengthening the renewable energy production chain
Rio Grande do Norte as a National Reference in Renewable Energies
During the meeting, Governor Fátima Bezerra highlighted that Rio Grande do Norte is currently self-sufficient in renewable energy electricity, particularly in wind generation. According to her, the new investment from the Chinese group State Grid strengthens structuring projects, such as the Green Industry Port, aimed at the green hydrogen chain.
The geographic position, constant winds, high solar irradiation, and favorable institutional environment make the state one of the most attractive in the country for new solar energy projects.
Environmental and Social Compensations Accompany the Projects
In addition to investments in energy generation, the Chinese group State Grid maintains environmental and social compensation actions in Rio Grande do Norte. One example cited was the project carried out in the Amarelão community in João Câmara, where the company invested R$ 8 million in a desalination and water supply system.
According to Sun Peng, new investments of this type may be made, always considering dialogue with local communities and traditional peoples. The governor reinforced the importance of these actions to ensure sustainable development and social inclusion.
Next Steps for the Expansion of Solar Energy in the State
At the end of the meeting, a new meeting was scheduled for the first half of January 2026 between company directors and state secretaries. The goal will be to advance the necessary technical, environmental, and administrative procedures for the execution of the investment in solar energy in Rio Grande do Norte.
The participation of agencies such as Idema and strategic secretaries indicates that the state seeks to expedite processes while maintaining legal security and respect for environmental regulations.
The announcement made in December 2025 reinforces that the Chinese group State Grid sees Rio Grande do Norte as a strategic hub for expanding solar energy in Brazil. The R$ 800 million investment, combined with job creation, integration with wind farms, and social actions, consolidates the state as a reference in renewable energies.
