Numbers Are Part Of Inventory Released At The End Of 2022, Highlighting Important Actions Such As The Use Of Renewable Energy By The Chemical Sector Company.

São Paulo, January 2023 – Grupo Sabará, a leader in the development of technologies, solutions, and raw materials geared towards the water treatment and food and beverage industries, has just released its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions report for the year 2021. The inventory, prepared by Grupo Sabará and audited by BSI Brazil Management Systems Ltd., indicates that 2021 emissions decreased by 5% compared to 2020, exceeding the target of

The Group, Which Is To Reduce By 4.2% Annually Until 2030.

“The goal of the report is to reveal Grupo Sabará’s profile regarding GHG emissions and, thus, enable the development of strategies for continuous reduction of gases and generated impacts, with quantitative and qualitative analyses. We are pleased with the results obtained so far, as we have surpassed the established target, but we are aware that we must advance even further in this area,” explains the ESG coordinator, Giovanna Cappellano.

The inventory takes into consideration all emission sources from the four production units and two administrative offices of the company, following the criteria established by the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program. The analysis is divided into 3 scopes, but only scopes 1 and 2 are included in the Group’s reduction target, with scope 1 – direct greenhouse gas emissions; 2 – indirect GHG emissions resulting from energy acquisition; and 3 – indirect emissions resulting from the company’s activities, but from sources that are not owned or controlled by it.

“This last analyzed period was essential for us to improve the measurement control in the Group’s units, which has had an internal and specific system developed since 2021 for the monthly monitoring of indicators that support our emission calculations, and which we refine at each stage,” adds Giovanna.

New Certification

The indirect emissions from scope 2, resulting from energy acquisition, were the main contributors to the good performance in 2021. This year, Grupo Sabará, which already had 100% renewable energy at its Santa Barbara D’Oeste unit, acquired the I-REC, certifying the use of clean energy from this unit, symbolizing its commitment to reducing gases and the negative impact generated by the consumption of energy produced from burning fuels.

“With the certification, Grupo Sabará ensures that the energy consumed comes from clean sources, and in our case, from wind farms. Before that, although we were guaranteed renewable energy at the Santa Barbara D’Oeste site through a contract, emissions were not calculated by the purchase method because it was not possible to confirm the energy source. Now, this is possible.”

In addition to all efforts for reduction, which also include awareness campaigns about the use of biofuels, the company purchased carbon credits to offset 100% of the remaining emissions from scopes 1 and 2. Each credit corresponds to one ton of CO2eq, reinforcing the commitment to reduction actions.

“Grupo Sabará’s business is directly linked to structural axes of life, such as quality water and food. Thus, we are constantly seeking processes that generate value not only internally, but especially for the products and solutions we offer. The quest for better initiatives goes beyond generating lower environmental impact, as the company’s guidelines provide positive impacts throughout our entire chain of activity,” concludes the ESG coordinator of Grupo Sabará.

Learn More: Greenhouse Gases

By absorbing part of the solar radiation in the atmosphere, greenhouse gases retain the energy of this radiation in the Earth’s atmosphere, turning it into heat. Thus, there is an increase in temperature on the planet, which contributes to worsening the greenhouse effect.

Although it is a natural phenomenon that regulates the Earth’s temperature and enables life on the planet, if highly stimulated by the excess emissions of gases from human activities, it can cause a complete imbalance in the climate system and, consequently, in ecosystems.
