Another devastating fire, on October 26, 1966, resulted in the deaths of 44 servicemen and injured 156, due to human error with flares.

Despite such adversities, the Oriskany continued operating until it was decommissioned in 1976. Attempts to repurpose the ship were blocked by Congress due to its deteriorating condition. In 2004, the United States Navy decided to give the ship a new purpose, transforming it into an artificial reef. The environmental preparation process involved removing toxic materials, including asbestos, before the controlled sinking on May 17, 2006.
