With Different Opinions, Serro Population Hopes for Generation of 1,500 Jobs But at the Same Time Is Afraid of the Installation of Herculano Mineradora!

According to Itatiaia, the historic city of Serro, with just over 20,000 inhabitants and located more than 200 km from Belo Horizonte, is experiencing great expectations regarding the possible creation of job vacancies thanks to the installation of the mineradora Herculano. A public hearing is scheduled for June 11, where details about the impact of mining in the region will be discussed.

Jobs and Economic Development in Sierra with Herculano Mineradora

Mayor Nondas Miranda (PL) emphasizes that Herculano Mineradora could be the key to the development of Serro. He believes that the generation of up to 1,500 jobs directly and indirectly will be a great boost for the local economy. “This is the alternative we have to promote development in our region. The city does not develop on its own. Job and income generation can impact all sectors of the municipality, from hotels and gas stations to clothing and furniture stores,” emphasizes the mayor.

Márcio Cândido Alves (PDT), president of the Chamber, reinforces this view, ensuring that the company will also increase the municipality’s revenues. “Serro will collect mandatory funds that will be allocated to tourism, renovations of historic mansions, churches, and squares,” says Alves, highlighting the economic benefits that mining can bring.

Controversies and Environmental Impact

However, not everyone is optimistic. The Federation of Quilombola Communities N’golo, which represents 245 families in the region, expresses concerns about the possible environmental impacts. The federation’s lawyer, Mateus de Mendonça, opposes the public hearing scheduled for June, arguing that it should only occur after all environmental impact studies are presented and the affected quilombola communities are consulted.

On the other hand, Jair Júnior, first secretary of the Quilombola Community Association of Queimadas, supports the holding of the public hearing in June. “Our community has been silenced by the Federation of Quilombolas of Minas Gerais N’golo. We want to have a voice in this public hearing to understand the project and be able to give our opinions,” asserts Jair Júnior, highlighting the importance of active participation in the process.

Sustainable Mining and Social Commitment with Herculano

However, Herculano promises 100% dry mining, eliminating the need for dams, a common concern among residents. Renata Veloso, Institutional Relations and Community Analyst at Herculano, highlights that the company will prioritize hiring local labor, including members of the quilombola community. “We know that Serro has prepared individuals to participate in this productive process. They will indeed be hired to work with us,” assures Renata.

Therefore, the Association of Artisan Cheese Producers of Serro also ensures that the traditional cheese production in the city will not be harmed by the venture. Thus, this news relieves many local producers who feared negative impacts on their activities.

Voices of the Community

The population of Serro has diverse opinions on the impact of mining. José Mário Santos is optimistic: “I think it’s great. It creates jobs, right? Then more money circulates in the city.” Vanderci de Jesus Rosário Costa agrees: “People need development to work. The city changes with more jobs and income.

On the other hand, Luciano Gonçalves takes a more cautious stance: “I’m for it; everyone needs to work, right? But we have to be concerned too. As long as it doesn’t destroy anything, it’s very welcome.” This diversity of opinions reflects the community’s expectations and concerns regarding the project.

In summary, Serro finds itself at a decisive moment, where the arrival of Herculano Mineradora can represent a milestone for economic growth and job generation. However, it is essential that all voices are heard and that the environmental and social impacts are carefully considered to ensure sustainable and balanced development for all involved.
