Man Arrested Pretending to Be His Dead Mother to Receive Pension; Investigation Began After Suspicion at the Court.
An extremely unusual case caught the attention of Italian authorities this week. A man was arrested for pretending to be his dead mother to receive pension benefits after attempting to renew her identity card at a registry office in the region of Mantua, Italy.
What initially seemed like a simple document update turned into a police investigation that revealed a mummified body, a sophisticated fraud, and a disappearance that may have begun a decade ago.
The incident occurred after a public employee noticed inconsistencies in the service.

Employee Noticed Strange Behavior and Alerted the Police
Thus, the investigation began when the registry office employee became suspicious of the woman who had come to renew an expired document.
According to a report in Corriere della Sera, Mayor Francesco Aporti stated: “It all started with the intuition of a registry office employee. Following an appointment, she attended to a woman who wanted to renew her expired identity card.
A woman very similar to the one in the photo on the document.”
In addition to the excessive resemblance, other behaviors drew attention. The supposed elderly woman arrived driving to the registry office, despite not having a driver’s license.
The employee then decided to report the episode to the police, who immediately began a series of checks.
Police Searches Data and Discovers Tax Irregularities and Absence in Health Services
While analyzing security camera footage, the officers noticed something was off.
Furthermore, consultations to databases revealed that there was no recent record of Graziella dall’Oglio in health services.
On the other hand, the retiree continued to file income tax regularly, indicating an annual receipt of around 53,000 euros, approximately R$ 330,000 in pension benefits. The inconsistencies strengthened suspicions that someone was impersonating the retiree.
He guaranteed that she would return.
Man Arrested Pretending to Be His Dead Mother to Receive Pension When Returning to the Registry Office
When the man returned to the registry office disguised as his mother, undercover agents approached him and invited him to follow them to the police station for clarification.
At the police unit, he eventually admitted that he was pretending to be his own mother to maintain the pension payments.
The suspect is a 58-year-old nurse, the only son of Graziella, unemployed and without recent records of professional activity. According to Mayor Aporti, his father, a doctor, had also passed away.
Mummified Body Found Inside the Suspect’s Residence
After the confession, the man allowed the police to enter his residence. Inside, they found a mummified body, presumably that of Graziella dall’Oglio.
Still, it is unknown exactly how long she had been dead.
Case Raises Debate on Public Controls and Vulnerability of the Elderly
The episode reignites discussions in Italy about pension oversight, the fragility of support networks, and how disappearances of elderly individuals can go unnoticed for long periods.
