MWM, American Engine Manufacturer, Honda, Automotive Giant, and L’Óreal Announce Closure of Their Factories in Argentina and Setup in Brazil.
On the morning of November 6, Bolsonaro announced that two multinationals will transfer their operations to Brazil. The companies mentioned by the president are the giants Honda and L’Óreal. In August of this year, another multinational, MWM, known for manufacturing its diesel engines, also announced it will close its factory in Córdoba, Argentina and transfer all production to Brazil, more precisely to the Jurubatuba region, southern São Paulo.
The president cites a “new investor confidence” in the country that will help create new jobs. After the news broke, Bolsonaro deleted the post.

Both Honda and L’Óreal denied that they will close their factories in the neighboring country. Meanwhile, MWM Argentina’s engine factory reported it ceased operations in Córdoba last month, but emphasized that the decision is not related to the victory of kirchnerism.

The group announced in August that it will stop producing automobiles at its factory in Argentina starting in 2020, focusing the local unit solely on motorcycle assembly.
“Aiming to strengthen the automobile business structure, given the abrupt changes in the automotive industry worldwide, Honda has been seeking to enhance inter-regional coordination and collaboration, optimizing the allocation and production capacity of automobiles globally,” it stated in a release.
The Honda Argentina unit has a production capacity of 30,000 vehicles per year and employs one thousand employees.
L’Óreal, the global leader in cosmetics, is transferring all production from its factory in Argentina to its unit in São Paulo.
The operation, which began three months ago, is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Between 30 million and 35 million more products will be produced annually in the São Paulo unit, which already produces about 200 million units.
Uruguay and Argentina are the only countries in Latin America where L’Óreal is not growing. With the closure of the factory in Argentina, the company will have factories in three countries on the continent: Brazil, Chile, and Mexico.
Brazil already has the most competitive production among the three and is expected to increase its exports, which currently account for 10% of sales. According to L’Óreal’s president in Brazil, Frank Ferlaino, even with the weakened peso and transportation costs, production in São Paulo will be more competitive.
