Honda Conducted Tests With Its New Autonomous Vehicle For A Month On A Construction Site. The Electric Vehicle Proved To Be Efficient And Capable Of Being Useful In The High-Demand Construction Sector

Honda already has an autonomous and fully electric vehicle called the Autonomous Work Vehicle (AWV). Several second-generation prototypes of the electric vehicle underwent a month of field testing at a construction site of Black & Veatch in New Mexico, performing various functions such as towing, transporting water, construction materials, and other supplies to predefined destinations within the large-scale solar energy construction project.

According to the automaker, the field test was the first to use several units of the electric vehicle working simultaneously to support the construction sector. The autonomous work vehicle features all-wheel drive that combines advanced autonomous technology with Honda’s rugged and durable off-road platform.

Among the autonomous technologies are sensors, GPS for location, radars, and stereo cameras for monitoring. Additionally, the electric vehicle can also be operated via remote control.

According to the project leader in the U.S. for the Honda AWV, Kenton Williams, with their testing partner, Black & Veatch, the automaker was able to showcase the potential of its electric autonomous vehicle prototype in a large-scale construction environment. Kenton believes that the prototype can bring greater efficiency, better environmental performance for the construction sector, and higher levels of safety.

The Multinational’s Autonomous Vehicle Can Transport 408 kg and Tow an Additional 725 kg

The construction site of a solar power plant proved to be ideal for observing the capabilities of the prototype, especially its ability to stop accurately at points along a predefined route.

Due to a high-definition map of the location, produced by Honda itself, the Black & Veatch operators defined the starting and stopping points for various AWVs with greater precision, using a cloud-based application interface that works on computers and tablets. Honda’s vehicles performed transportation tasks and proved capable of stopping within centimeters of predefined points.

The test also demonstrated the viability of the autonomous vehicle’s battery system, which operated for up to 8 hours in a high-temperature environment. The prototype transported loads of 408 kg and towed another load of over 725 kg in a separate container. Honda has yet to announce its sales plans for the model that operated in construction, but it will continue to develop the platform through field testing.

Volkswagen Pursues Autonomous Path and Develops Autonomous Electric Kombi

This month, the German automaker Volkswagen announced that it will invest R$ 14 billion to make its electric Kombi the best autonomous vehicle in the world.

The investment was made in the startup Argo AI, which will be responsible for creating the technology for the new electric Kombi, called ID. BUZZ. The Kombi is set to launch next year, but to turn the model into an autonomous vehicle, this date may change, as it is expected to be autonomous by 2025.
