The FPSO Platform Will Be Petrobras’ Newest Bet for Production in the Brazilian Pre-Salt Region. With IBAMA Authorization, the Almirante Barroso Can Now Begin Activities in the Búzios Field.

The state-owned oil company Petrobras achieved another important milestone for its operations in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin last Tuesday (04/11). The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) authorized the company to begin operations on the FPSO Almirante Barroso, moored in the Búzios Field. The production license is valid for 8 years, ensuring a great period for fuel exploration in the area.

Petrobras Advances in Pre-Salt Exploration Campaign in the Santos Basin with New IBAMA Authorization to Put the FPSO Almirante Barroso into Operation

Petrobras received authorization from IBAMA to begin operations of the FPSO Almirante Barroso in the Búzios Field, in the Santos Basin.

The floating production storage and offloading unit was converted from the hull of the oil tanker Eddie in China and underwent commissioning activities at the BrasFELS shipyard in Angra dos Reis (RJ).

Now, with the authorization for the start of activities granted by IBAMA, the state oil company will be able to advance in its exploration campaign in the pre-salt region.

With the capacity to produce 150,000 barrels per day of oil and process 6 million m³ of gas per day, the FPSO Almirante Barroso will be interconnected to ten wells that will compose the 5th production module of the Búzios Field.

The platform also has the capacity to inject 220,000 barrels of water per day, ensuring even greater efficiency in its activities.

The FPSO Almirante Barroso was named in honor of the commanding leader of the Naval Battle of Riachuelo, in the Paraná River, in 1865.

As for its construction, the Japanese shipyard Modec was responsible for the project and will also be responsible for operating the platform.

The Búzios Field produces approximately 600,000 barrels of oil and 23 million m³ of natural gas daily.

With the onset of operations of the FPSO Almirante Barroso following IBAMA’s authorization, the field is expected to reach 33% of the total production of the oil company by 2026.

According to information released by the company, the operating license granted by IBAMA is valid for 8 years.

Start of Production on the FPSO Almirante Barroso Marks a Significant Moment for Pre-Salt Exploration in the Búzios Field

The commencement of operations of the FPSO Almirante Barroso represents a significant advancement for the Brazilian oil industry and Petrobras itself.

The Búzios Field is considered one of the largest deep-water oil fields in the world, and the production of the FPSO Almirante Barroso will be essential for maintaining and increasing national oil and gas production.

Moreover, the use of cutting-edge technology and concern for environmental preservation are hallmarks of this project.

Petrobras has increasingly invested in the exploration of the Brazilian pre-salt, and the FPSO Almirante Barroso is a prime example of this. With IBAMA’s authorization and its entry into operation, the Búzios Field will become even more significant for the country’s oil and gas production.
