The Ibama Document Is Valid for 8 Years and Will Allow the State-Owned Company to Produce Oil and Natural Gas with the Aid of FPSO Platforms. Petrobras Can Start the Exploration Campaign in the Pre-Salt of the Santos Basin in the Coming Days.
The state-owned company Petrobras is now preparing to start a large exploration campaign in the Brazilian pre-salt region. The company has the installation licenses for two FPSO platforms granted for the Santos Basin region. The Brazilian Institute of Environment (Ibama) granted the documents for the installation of P-71 and Marechal Duque de Caxias, which can now begin operations in the region’s blocks.
Petrobras Is Ready to Start the Oil Production Campaign in the Pre-Salt of the Santos Basin After Ibama Granting License for FPSO Platform Installation
In the coming months, the state-owned company Petrobras has a large exploration project in the Santos Basin region.
After the granting of the installation licenses for two FPSO platforms in the pre-salt region of the basin, the company can finally start exploring the resources.

The first platform is the FPSO P-71, located in the Itapu Field in the Santos Basin region. It will be responsible for exploring the area for the next eight years, according to the Ibama document.
The P-71 has already headed to the Itapu field in October, after undergoing commissioning activities at the Jurong Aracruz shipyard in Espírito Santo.
It has a production capacity of 150 thousand barrels of oil and 6 million cubic meters of gas, as well as a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels of oil.
Thus, Petrobras intends to leverage the FPSO to expand its operations in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin, taking advantage of the high production potential of the vessel.
Ibama Also Granted Installation License for FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias in the Mero Field Region, Pre-Salt of the Santos Basin
The granting of the installation license for P-71 was not the only major achievement for Petrobras this week.
This is because the state-owned company received from Ibama the document for the installation of FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias in the Mero Field region, also located in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin.
The new Mero platform, which is still under construction, will have a processing capacity of 180 thousand barrels of oil and 12 million m³ of gas per day.
According to Petrobras, production is expected to begin as early as 2024, after a few months of operational testing.
In addition to the two installation licenses, Petrobras also received the Ibama license authorizing the start of seismic research in the Aram block, in the Santos Basin.
All activities will be carried out with the support of the M/V Artemis Odyssey vessel from Westcon Geo, and the node installation vessels Siem Dorado from Siem Offshore, and Boka Tiamat from Topaz Energy and Marine.
Learn More About the Santos Basin
The largest offshore sedimentary basin in the country, with a total area of over 350 thousand square kilometers, extends from Cabo Frio (state of Rio de Janeiro) to Florianópolis (state of Santa Catarina).
It is in this region that the Pre-Salt Polo of the Santos Basin is located, which encompasses the largest producing fields in the country, such as Tupi and Búzios. Considered world-class assets, the pre-salt fields combine a large volume of reserves, high productivity, and significant value generation potential.
