Alongside giants like Petrobras, TAG, and TBG, the company from São José dos Campos aims to encourage and mediate discussions, share success stories, and provide technical materials on the power of geotechnology focused exclusively on the oil and gas market in Brazil and around the world.
The Imagem Geosistemas – official distributor of Esri in Brazil – viewing positively the market movement of Oil and Gas towards technological innovation and digital transformation, becomes a member of one of the largest representative entities of the market in Brazil, the Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas (IBP), and globally, the “Pipeline Open Data Standard (PODS) Association,” in addition to technical communities such as the “Petroleum User Group (PUG).” In this context, the company will be represented by the professional Leandro Coutinho, Geoprocessing Analyst, specialist in Marketing for the Oil & Gas vertical of Imagem Geossistemas.
At the Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas (IBP) – an entity that organizes meetings, training, and events related to the sector, Imagem Geosistemas will have a consultative and proactive agenda, with the responsibility to emphasize the value of geographic intelligence throughout the entire production chain “from well to gas station,” through solutions focused on innovation and integration, always in line with projects aimed at energy transition. The sharing of the “Painel RS” portal (https://painelrs.com.br) with the institute was one of the first steps of this agenda, ensuring that the information hosted on the panel can be used to support recovery efforts and resilience projects for assets impacted by the tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul.

Billions of barrels on the equatorial margin could lead Amapá to double its oil production in Brazil — the state aims to enter the route of companies in the Campos Basin, attract investments, and boost jobs and businesses in the oil and gas sector.
“The opportunity to be part of the IBP allows us closer interaction with companies in the sector to exchange best practices and success stories utilizing geotechnology,” explains Coutinho. “The approach to complex problems through geographic intelligence makes apparent trends and relationships, often hidden, that are crucial for decision-making. Through the relationship channels maintained by the Institute, we will create valuable alliances, mapping the way to a more efficient and sustainable future,” emphasizes the specialist.
Already at the Petroleum User Group – PUG GIS Hub – which is a social network and at the same time a space for sharing content about the oil and gas sector, Leandro Coutinho will have a seat as a counselor and will contribute with data and articles. The first step will be taken next month, with the sharing in the community of success stories and best practices achieved by Brazilian natural gas carriers using geographic intelligence, joining the over 1,200 articles and presentations from companies across all subsets of the industry spread around the globe.
Lastly, Imagem Geosistemas becomes part of the Pipeline Open Data Standard (PODS) Association – a global institution that provides standardized data models for companies working with pipelines and gas pipelines. In this space, the geotechnology specialist will reveal more about the company’s expertise in relation to geotechnology projects, including success cases such as those from the Associated Gas Transporter – TAG, presented at the O&G Summit 2022.
“The PODS Standard is the best starting point for implementing a GIS and data management program due to its effectiveness and scalability,” reveals the professional from Imagem Geosistemas.
Both communities are sponsored by the American Esri.
Main Challenges Currently Facing the Oil and Gas Market
For Coutinho, professionals in oil and gas companies are often required to spend a lot of time assimilating the latest in GIS technology and testing new solutions. “When faced with these needs, they seek knowledge in channels that are not specialized in Oil and Gas,” he reveals.
Additionally, organizations tend to restrict business needs and demands for solutions to their own team (when it exists) of GIS specialists.
Another issue pointed out by Leandro is that experience sharing on Geographic Intelligence is not common in oil and gas companies. “Often hindered by information secrecy, but sometimes due to the lack of an appropriate communication channel,” explains Coutinho.
Yet the benefits of being part of entities and industry groups are many.
The first is to have a specific debate channel for the GIS market in O&G, the possibility to create shared workflows by specialists from O&G companies worldwide separated by relevant market themes; to share and access videos, articles, event presentations, and success cases from dozens of O&G companies on all relevant market topics.
Finally, having access to training plans for free in the online format, access to a global data atlas focused on the oil and gas industry and separated by relevant market themes, in addition to possible participation in global discussions, such as the latest Energy Resources Seminar 2024 and the Esri Energy Resources GIS Conference 2024. At this point, the projected calendar for 2024 includes topics such as Energy Efficiency, Energy Transition, Operational Risk Management, and Systems Integration, such as SAP and Maximo.
