Auction Aims to Connect Important Ports, Boost Cargo Transportation and Strengthen the Rail Infrastructure of Southeastern Brazil!
The federal government is advancing with a strategic project that involves the concession of part of the Estrada de Ferro 118 (EF-118), known as the Southeastern Railway Ring.
This ambitious project, which aims to connect the Port of Vitória to the Port of Niterói in Rio de Janeiro, is in the preparation phase for an auction that is expected to occur in 2025. The planned investment for the next five years is R$ 4.5 billion, according to the website esbrasil.
Structure and Phases of the Railway Project
The project is divided into two main phases: a greenfield project, which starts from scratch, and a brownfield project, which relies on existing structures. In total, the railway will have a 577-kilometer length.

One of the highlights of the project is the Anchieta Branch, which extends from Santa Leopoldina to Anchieta. Presented by Vale in August 2024, this branch encompasses 90 kilometers, of which 80 km go to Anchieta and 10 km form a loop to the Ubu port, operated by Samarco.
This segment is expected to receive R$ 6 billion in investments, as part of the countermeasures from the renewals of the railway concessions of Vitória-Minas and Estrada de Ferro Carajás.
Logistical Impact and Vision of the State Government
The governor of Espírito Santo, Renato Casagrande, emphasized the importance of the railway for the state, highlighting the need to improve the railway connection with the center of Brazil.
“In 2025, we need to intensify efforts to enhance Espírito Santo’s railway link with the heart of the country. This will be crucial to increase the volume of cargo transported, and railways are fundamental to that”, he stated.

This project is a vital component of the federal government’s strategy to improve transportation infrastructure in Brazil.
With the auction and the subsequent construction of the railway, the expectation is that the connection between Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro will become a pillar of cargo transportation such as iron ore, coal, pig iron, copper concentrate, and containers, strengthening the region’s economy.
