The Fire at Revap — Petrobras Refinery in São Paulo, Occurred in the Tank Storage Area for Products Used in Asphalt and Fuel Oil Preparation

On this Sunday, the 29th, a fire in the containment reservoir of the Henrique Lage Refinery (Revap), operated by Petrobras, in São José dos Campos (SP), mobilized 12 vehicles and 29 firefighters between the afternoon and evening. In São Paulo, Método Potencial is recruiting for 22 positions for work at Replan.

According to information from the Fire Department, which responded to the incident at 3:35 PM, the fuel that overflowed and remained in the containment dyke caught fire, and the dark smoke was due to the burning of this material.

Around 10 PM, firefighters reported via their Twitter account that the fire had been completely extinguished and that there were no casualties. The black smoke caused by the flames startled residents and reached neighboring cities.

The fire occurred in the tank storage area for products used in asphalt and fuel oil preparation. The causes will be investigated.

No one was injured. Residents of neighboring cities like Jacareí, Caçapava, and Taubaté also reported seeing the smoke in the sky. According to the Fire Department, there is no risk to the population.

In a statement, Petrobras reported that the fire occurred in tank storage areas for products used in asphalt and fuel oil preparation. According to the company, Revap’s brigades, along with firefighters, acted in combating the fire.

On this day, the 30th, Petrobras stated that it is investigating the causes of the fire and that there was no impact on production at the refinery located in São Paulo due to the fire, as the refinery was already undergoing a scheduled maintenance shutdown prior to the fire, Petrobras added.

Revap has a processing capacity of 252,000 barrels per day, equivalent to 14% of the national production of petroleum derivatives, according to information from Petrobras’s website.

The refinery stands out for its location: it is situated on the banks of the Presidente Dutra Highway, with access to the main consumer centers: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and the Port of São Sebastião on the northern coast of São Paulo.

The president of the Petrol Workers’ Union of São José dos Campos and Region, Rafael Prado, stated that the refinery entered a shutdown process last Thursday.

According to him, a leak occurred in a tank on Friday, and the teams are investigating whether there is a connection between Sunday’s fire and the first incident.

Revap is not among the refining assets that Petrobras wants to sell. The company is looking to sell 8 of its 13 refineries, retaining units in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
