The Recognition of Geographical Indication INPI Boosts the Arabica Coffee from the Interior of São Paulo, Driving Sustainable Development, the Local Economy, and the Preservation of Paulista Coffee Culture

The recent recognition of the INPI Geographical Indication (GI) for the Nova Alta Paulista region (SP) marks an important step in strengthening the production of arabica coffee in Brazil, according to an article published.

The certification, published in the Industrial Property Journal on October 7, consolidates the historical link between the territory and coffee culture, enhancing the origin and quality of the product.

The registration places Nova Alta Paulista among the 154 Brazilian regions already recognized by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), comprising 113 Indications of Provenance (IPs) and 41 Denominations of Origin (DOs).

As a result, local producers now have an endorsement that enhances their competitiveness, ensures authenticity, and stimulates regional economic growth, reinforcing the importance of Paulista coffee on both national and international stages.

Tradition and Quality of Arabica Coffee Drive the Recognition of Geographical Indication INPI

The INPI Geographical Indication for Nova Alta Paulista confirms the tradition of a region that has built its identity around arabica coffee cultivation. Located in the far west of São Paulo, the area has had coffee roots since the early last century.

In the 1960s, local production reached approximately 95,000 tons, solidifying coffee as the main driver of economic and social development.

This historical trajectory was crucial for the recognition, which was based on academic, institutional, and media records presented to the federal agency.

Since then, the region has maintained its agricultural vocation, particularly in municipalities whose economies heavily depend on coffee cultivation, a symbol of tradition and a source of income for thousands of families.

Regional Development and Sustainability Strengthen Coffee from Nova Alta Paulista

The certification granted by the INPI Geographical Indication goes beyond the appreciation of the product: it also represents a milestone for sustainable regional development.

The protection granted by the Indication of Provenance ensures that the name “Nova Alta Paulista” is used exclusively by producers from the recognized area, preventing misuse and encouraging responsible agricultural practices.

This recognition strengthens local production chains, promotes rural tourism, and fosters investments in clean technologies aimed at coffee cultivation.

Since 1969, with the state establishment of the railway and the official adoption of the term “Nova Alta Paulista” in the 1970 Census by IBGE, the territorial identity of the region has been consolidated, reflecting the essential role of coffee in its economic and social history.

Economy, Tradition, and Cultural Identity Linked to Geographical Indication INPI

With the INPI Geographical Indication, Nova Alta Paulista reaffirms its prominence in the São Paulo and national agribusiness.

The certification validates decades of dedication from producers and recognizes coffee as a cultural and economic heritage of the region.

The title directly contributes to strengthening the local economy, expanding export opportunities and job creation.

The prestige gained ensures consumers a product with guaranteed provenance and verified geographical identity.

The initiative reinforces the importance of cooperation among producers, institutions, and public bodies, demonstrating how the appreciation of regional origins can innovatively and sustainably boost traditional sectors.
