Bunker One, Global Leader in Fuel and Lubricant Supply for Shipping, Sponsors Research to Enable Safe Addition of Biodiesel to Marine Fuels

In line with global and national decarbonization demands, Bunker One, a global leader in the supply of fuel (bunker) and lubricants for shipping, is investing in the development of a new category of marine fuel in Brazil. The company has partnered with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) to study the feasibility of adding 7% biodiesel to marine diesel fuel.

Brazil Is the Second Largest Biodiesel Producer in the World

The expectation is that, within eight months, results will be presented confirming this feasibility, which could contribute to the creation of a sustainable public policy for the shipping industry. The project’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to harness the potential of this renewable energy source in Brazil, which is the second largest producer of biodiesel in the world.

“The shipping market can offer an unparalleled scale boost to the biodiesel sector, and we believe that enabling the safe addition of biodiesel to marine fuels is a strategic solution for strengthening Brazil. Bunker One is already successfully developing similar projects in other countries, and Brazil is an important market for our operations. We want to innovate here as well, contributing to the sustainable growth of the shipping sector in the region, as well as creating an alternative for the biodiesel industry, which has been impacted by the reduction in the amount of biodiesel in the blend with road diesel,” says Bunker One President Flavio Ribeiro.

Field research will be conducted on Bunker One’s tugboats operating in Rio de Janeiro, and further studies will be carried out at the UFRN Laboratory of Environmental Analysis, Primary Processing, and Biofuels, a national reference in studies related to the biofuels sector. The work will be led by seven UFRN researchers, under the coordination of Professor Amanda Duarte Gondim, PhD in Chemistry, Petroleum, and Renewable Energies. All tests will be conducted according to the resolutions of the National Agency of Petroleum, based on blends that will be evaluated during storage and application.

The Use of Biodiesel in Land Transportation Is Already a Reality in the Country

The use of biodiesel in land transportation is already a reality in Brazil, but it has not yet been implemented in water transportation. This change has the potential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels in maritime transport, help combat climate change, and improve air quality.

“We believe this project can have a significant macroeconomic impact on Brazil. By enabling the addition of biodiesel to marine fuels and seeking product approval in the global market, biodiesel producers can scale up through the possibility of exporting this input to the international bunker industry. Given Brazil’s capacity for producing renewable raw materials, agribusiness sectors are also likely to be positively impacted. One example is soybean meal, which is the main ingredient in animal feed and could see its price lowered due to increased soybean crushing for biodiesel production,” analyzes Flavio Ribeiro.

By assessing the physicochemical properties of the blends directly on the vessels, the research will be able to provide more accurate analyses of the technological bottlenecks for adding biodiesel to marine fuels and indicate pathways to promote the use of biodiesel in the sector.
