In 2024, the National Institute of Social Security (INSS) announced a news that is being celebrated by workers with registered jobs: the end of the minimum age for retirement by contribution time. The decision comes as a response to the pressure for greater flexibility in the social security system, modernizing the rules for those with registered jobs and guaranteeing to many Brazilians the long-awaited possibility of retiring without depending on an age criterion.

With the new INSS rules, men and women who contributed for most of their lives can finally throw away the clock that marked the wait for the minimum age. Now, women can retire after 30 years of contribution, while men can retire after 35 years, regardless of their age when they reach this time. This flexibility represents significant relief and a complete reshaping of the retirement plans for millions of Brazilians.

Formula 86/96: The New INSS Model

With the end of the old Retirement Factor, the INSS introduced the so-called “Formula 86/96,” a system that redefines the calculation of retirement by contribution time. This model adds the worker’s age to the contribution time, requiring a score of 86 points for women and 96 points for men. This mechanism aims to more fairly serve workers with registered jobs, as it balances age and service time, better reflecting the reality of each contributor.

To ensure a smooth transition, the government also planned gradual adjustments to the minimum score until 2027. From that year on, the required score will be 90 points for women and 100 for men, in line with the increase in Brazilians’ life expectancy.

Retirement Options

For those in the job market with registered jobs, the INSS offers several retirement modalities, each tailored to different realities and needs. Here are the main options:

Retirement by Age: Maintained for workers aged 65 (men) or 60 (women), requiring 15 years of contribution.

Retirement by Contribution Time: Although it was eliminated for new workers after 2019, it still applies to those who had already met the requirements before this change.

Special Retirement: Focused on professions exposed to unhealthy conditions, such as miners and health workers.

Retirement for Permanent Disability: Benefit for those who have been permanently incapacitated for work due to health reasons.

Rural Retirement: Exclusive for rural workers, requiring proof of activity for at least 15 years.

The INSS, aiming to improve management and access to social security rights, offers other vital benefits such as sick pay, maternity pay, prison assistance, and death pension. These benefits are essential to ensure the financial security of workers and their families.

Meu INSS Website: Access the Federal Government portal and consult services such as payment statements, retirement simulations, and appointment scheduling for examinations, all in a practical manner.

Meu INSS App: Available for download, it allows you to check the same information as the website anytime and anywhere.

Phone – Central 135: Service from Monday to Saturday, answering questions and providing support regarding benefits and contributions.

In-Person Service: At INSS agencies, appointments can be scheduled online to avoid queues.

These options ensure that workers with registered jobs are always informed about the new retirement rules and other benefits offered by the INSS. Adjusting to this new era of flexibility in retirements, millions of Brazilians gain the right to dream of a safer and more dignified future.
