Renewable Energy Drives Economic And Social Development In The Northeast With Investments Over R$ 580 Million And Job Creation.

With support from the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development (MIDR) and resources from the Northeast Development Fund (FDNE), two major projects in renewable energy are transforming the reality of municipalities in the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba. Together, the projects — the Seridó Wind Farm and the Monte Verde Solar Complex — amount to over R$ 580 million in public investments, as well as promoting job creation, social inclusion, and positive environmental impact.

The initiative reinforces the Northeast’s prominence in Brazil’s energy transition, associating renewable energy generation with concrete benefits for historically vulnerable communities.

In addition to renewable energy production, the social contributions required by the Federal Government are ensuring structural improvements and quality of life in strategic areas such as education, tourism, road infrastructure, and sustainability.

Support For Decentralization And Energy Autonomy In The Northeast Interior

According to Anita de Cássia, coordinator of the FDNE at Sudene, these investments not only boost renewable energy production but also decentralize the national electric system, generating autonomy for municipalities far from the capitals.

“They help to decentralize energy production. Instead of relying solely on large plants, we can better distribute this generation, which provides more security for the system and favors the growth of local productive arrangements,” she explained.

The FDNE, operated by the Northeast Bank, plans to invest R$ 47 billion in 2024, of which R$ 9.5 billion will be allocated to infrastructure.

Additionally, the federal government is coordinating the raising of US$ 300 million with the World Bank to strengthen investments in sanitation and other structural projects in the Northeast, as highlighted by national secretary Eduardo Tavares.

“Within the scope of the secretary’s office, we are working on a strategy to raise US$ 300 million from the World Bank for the Development Funds, prioritizing investment, including for sanitation projects in the Northeast,” he stated.

Seridó Wind Farm Transforms Local Economy And Promotes Social Inclusion

Located in the municipalities of Parelhas (RN) and Santa Luzia (PB), the Seridó Wind Farm received R$ 173 million from the FDNE.

Since January 2024, ten new turbines from units III and VI have been in operation, totaling 45 MW of installed capacity.

During construction, 1,360 direct and indirect jobs were created.

The social contributions developed in the surrounding area include:

  • Support for community tourism in the UNESCO Geopark Seridó, with the training of 40 guides;
  • Training of 70 construction professionals focusing on female inclusion in partnership with SENAI-RN;
  • Environmental education with the RN+Clean campaign, reaching 12 thousand students in 12 municipalities;
  • Installation of a playground in a preschool and support for the network of recyclers Recicla Seridó;
  • Installation of a photovoltaic system in the Parelhas hospital;
  • Planting 125 thousand native seedlings in 50 hectares as environmental compensation;
  • Resurfacing of state highways RN-086 and RN-085.

“Small and medium businesses in the region start supplying to the job sites and to the professionals who arrive with the projects. Afterwards, and in a more lasting way, there is an impact on local infrastructure,” emphasized Anita de Cássia.

Monte Verde Solar Complex Boosts Renewable Energy And Family Agriculture

Located in the municipalities of Lajes, Jandaíra, and Pedro Avelino (RN), the Monte Verde Solar Complex began its operations in April 2024.

The project by EDP Renewables comprises four photovoltaic plants (Monte Verde II, III, IV, and V), totaling 212 MW of installed capacity and investments of R$ 411 million from the FDNE.

During its implementation, the complex generated 200 direct jobs and 100 indirect jobs, in addition to currently maintaining 18 jobs.

But the impact goes beyond energy: the company executes social projects focused on sustainability and citizenship.

Among the actions are:

  • EDP Renewables Rural: encouragement for family agriculture in the semi-arid region with sustainable practices, such as production without pesticides, rational use of water, and training for marketing;
  • EDP In Schools: initiatives focused on citizenship and health in public schools, in partnership with municipal education departments.

“The contributions help ensure that large-scale enterprises are instruments of local transformation. They are an essential mechanism to ensure that development comes alongside social inclusion and generation of opportunities, as well as improving quality of life,” emphasizes Anita.

Northeast Establishes Itself As A National Reference In Renewable Energy

The projects of the Seridó Wind Farm and the Monte Verde Solar Complex exemplify how the energy transition can be conducted with social responsibility and a focus on regional development.

With robust investments, structural contributions, and direct impact on communities, the Northeast reaffirms its leadership in the renewable energy sector and its ability to combine sustainability with inclusion.
