During this search, technicians identified considerable damage on Rua Duque Estrada, in Gávea, where a leak was causing contamination of the stormwater network, discharging directly into the Visconde de Albuquerque canal. According to Maria Alice Scardua Rangel, service coordinator of Águas do Rio, the immediate solution to the problem reflects the company’s commitment to improving the water quality in the region.

Collective Responsibility: The Crucial Role Of Inspection

With the aid of advanced technologies, such as robots equipped with cameras for pipeline inspection, the inspection teams from Águas do Rio detected buildings illegally discharging sewage. From January to June of this year, in the neighborhoods of Gávea and Leblon alone, 15 buildings were notified and instructed to regularize within 30 days. Sinval Andrade, the company’s superintendent, emphasizes that the inspection work is not just about punishing, but correcting and raising awareness among the population about the importance of proper maintenance.

The revitalization of the Visconde de Albuquerque canal follows the same successful pattern as the Lineu de Paula Machado canal, located in Jardim Botânico. The now clear water harbors fish and herons, a visible sign that the interventions made are bearing fruit. The technicians from Águas do Rio, still last year, managed to identify and combat a significant sewage discharge from the Hospital Federal da Lagoa that was contaminating the canal.
