Itaboraí signed a protocol of intentions with the oil company Petrobras for the assignment of areas of Polo GasLub. The agreement promises to resume the economy in the oil and gas sector, exploring the local infrastructure, in addition to attracting large industries to the municipality.

Itaboraí, which has a history full of victories and defeats, is experiencing hope of an economic turnaround and job creation with the resumption of the works at Polo GasLub (formerly Comperj). The municipality began its journey in a simple way, and later became, in 1978, the most important agricultural center in Vila de Santo Antônio de Sá, and production began to be shipped two years later in wooden boxes on the 14 boats belonging to the port. Itaboraí was economically consolidated in 1860, where river transport was gradually replaced by rail, receiving all the production of genres from the northeast of Rio de Janeiro by rail and sending them in boats along the Aldeia River to the Macacu River.

But unfortunately, in 1874, the Estrada Ferro-Carril Niteroiense was inaugurated, from Niterói to Porto das Caixas, replacing river transport. The construction of the road was one of the main factors responsible for the decline of the port, the years went by and Itaboraí did little for the development of the city.

Comperj works returned economic hope and job creation to Itaboraí

Here comes a hope of economic recovery for the municipality, the works of Comperj (Petrochemical Complex of Rio de Janeiro) were initiated by Petrobras. The beginning of activities soon generated more than two thousand direct jobs. But all that is good lasts little, and in 2015, however, the Comperj works were paralyzed, which made Itaboraí enter an economic decline again.

The stoppage of the works devastated the municipality's commercial activity, which plummeted by almost half and more than 700 stores closed. The real estate market has cooled down, dropping property prices by almost 45%.

But hope did not leave the hearts of the workers, who knew that Itaboraí was going to make a comeback. With the activities of Polo GasLub (formerly Comperj), Itaboraí is experiencing hope of economic recovery, the new moment has the help of Governor Claúdio Castro, who has been talking to Mayor Marcelo Delaroli.

Elected in 2020, Delaroli, in ten months of government, attracted businessmen and brought resources from the Union and the State, in addition to having already carried out many works in the city. The government also signed a memorandum of understanding with the oil company Petrobras for the assignment of areas of the Polo GasLub. The idea is to explore the potential of the local infrastructure to attract large industries and enable economic recovery in the oil and gas sector.

Brazilian oil giant Petrobras has committed to invest BRL 13,7 million over the two-year period for six projects, focusing on education in the state of Rio. The result of the selection includes initiatives supported by the Law of Incentive to Sport and Culture of the State of Rio (State Law No. 8.266 / 2018).
