Itaboraí, which has a history filled with victories and defeats, lives with hope for an economic turnaround and job generation with the resumption of the GasLub Pole (formerly Comperj). The municipality began its journey in a simple way, and later became in 1978 the most important agricultural center of the Village of Santo Antônio de Sá, with production starting to be shipped two years later in wooden boxes on the 14 boats belonging to the port. This is the origin of the well-known neighborhood of Porto das Caixas.

Itaboraí Economically Consolidated Itself in 1860, When River Transport Gradually Gave Way to Rail Transport, Receiving All the Production of Goods from the Northeastern Fluminense by Railway and Sending It by Boat via the Aldeia River, up to the Macacu River.
Unfortunately, in 1874, the Niteroiense Railway, from Niterói to Porto das Caixas, Was Inaugurated, Replacing River Transport. The Construction of the Road Was One of the Main Reasons for the Decline of the Port; Years Went By and Itaboraí Did Little for the Development of the City.

Comperj Works Restored Economic Hope and Job Creation for Itaboraí
A ray of hope for the municipality’s economic recovery has emerged, as the works of Comperj (Rio de Janeiro Petrochemical Complex) Were Initiated by Petrobras. The Start of Activities Soon Generated More than Two Thousand Direct Jobs. But All Good Things Come to an End, and in 2015, the Comperj Works Were Halted, Causing Itaboraí to Enter into Economic Decline Again.
The Halt of the Works Devastated the Municipality’s Commercial Activity, Which Plummeted Almost by Half and More Than 700 Stores Closed. The Real Estate Market Cooled, Bringing Property Prices Down by Almost 45%.
But Hope Did Not Leave the Hearts of Workers, Who Knew That Itaboraí Would Overcome. With the Activities of the GasLub Pole (formerly Comperj), Itaboraí Lives With Hope for Economic Recovery; This New Moment Counts on the Help of Governor Cláudio Castro, Who Has Been in Talks with Mayor Marcelo Delaroli.
Election in 2020, Delaroli, in Ten Months of Administration, Attracted Business Owners and Brought Resources from the Union and the State, and Has Already Completed Many Works in the City. The Idea Is to Explore the Potential of the Local Infrastructure to Attract Large Industries and Make Economic Recovery in the Oil and Gas Sector Feasible.
The Brazilian Oil Giant Petrobras Committed to Investing R$ 13.7 Million Over a Period of Two Years for Six Projects Focused on Education in the State of Rio. The Results of the Selection Include Initiatives Supported by the State of Rio’s Law for Incentives to Sports and Culture (State Law No. 8.266/2018).
