With the capacity to produce 80% of Roraima's energy consumption, the Jaguatirica II thermoelectric plant is considered the largest in the state

Located in the Bom Intento region, in the rural area of Boa Vista, the Jaguatirica II thermoelectric power plant is considered one of the most significant generators for the state of Roraima. With a total power of 140,834 MW, the thermoelectric plant runs on natural gas. This is extracted from the Azulão field, also operated by Eneva in the Amazon Basin. The field started operating only in September last year, 20 years after its discovery.

According to the channel BV sheet, on February 15, the thermoelectric plant Jaguatirica II, owned by the energy company Eneva in Roraima, received authorization from the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) to start the commercial operation of the first production unit, initially capable of generating 48,653 MegaWatts.

Inaugurated by President Jair Bolsonaro, the Jaguatirica II plant represents a milestone in the beginning of the effective change in the state's energy matrix, starting with the replacement of diesel energy, which is more polluting and more expensive. The thermoelectric plant, according to Eneva, is capable of putting an end to the instability regarding energy in Roraima, as it has the potential to supply more than 80% of the state's consumption.

Bearing in mind that it is the only Federative Unit in the whole country that is not linked to the National Energy System, Roraima therefore depends entirely on local energy generation.

Also in Roraima, other thermoelectric power generation units are expected to start commercial operation in the coming months. According to the company Eneva, this will help reduce energy costs and pollutant emissions.

The Jaguatirica II thermoelectric power plant is the first project in the Isolated Systems Auction No. 01/2019 to start commercial operation and is expected to be the largest plant in the state of Roraima, in the northern region of the country.

About the Azulão Project, linked to the Jaguatirica II thermoelectric plant

The sale of Petrobras do Azulão to Eneva took place in November 2017, for more than 54 million dollars. The site was discovered in 1999 and declared commercial after 5 years, in 2004. However, until the moment of its sale, 13 years later, it was not put into operation by the state company.

Natural gas production in the Azulão field only started in May 2021. In September of the same year, sales began. At the end of 2021, in November, Eneva obtains a license from the state environmental agency — State Foundation for the Environment and Water Resources (Femarh) to operate the Jaguatirica II thermoelectric plant.
